June 11, 2026 · The Boston Globe

Seven teams won state titles on Thursday, including a historic first for Cape Cod girls' lacrosse.

High school spring sports reached their final days this week in Massachusetts. On Thursday, seven teams won state championships at different locations around the state. The spring season will end with more championship games on Friday. These tournaments decided the best teams in each sport and division.

The biggest story came from girls' lacrosse at Babson College. Sandwich High School beat Ipswich 9-6 to win the Division 4 championship. This was special because Sandwich became the first girls' lacrosse team from Cape Cod to ever win a state title. Junior Elisabeth Stutzman scored three goals to lead her team to victory.

Other lacrosse champions were crowned at the same location. Cohasset girls' lacrosse won their second title in three years by beating Norwell 9-6. This was their fourth championship overall across different divisions. Senior Avery Regan led the way with three goals in the victory.

In boys' volleyball, Wayland finally won their first state championship. They beat Westfield in four sets to capture the Division 2 title. Senior Finn Bell made the final kill of the match and finished his career as the state's all-time leader in kills with 1,485. This was Wayland's fourth time playing in a championship game.

Rugby teams also competed for titles on Thursday. Belmont girls won their eighth championship in a row, showing their continued dominance in the sport. BC High boys completed a three-peat by winning their third straight Division 1 title. Hanover boys went back-to-back by winning Division 2 for the second year in a row.

Friday brings seven more championship games across baseball, softball, lacrosse, and volleyball. The Division 1 baseball game features English High against Georgetown at 4 p.m. Division 1 boys' lacrosse has Lincoln-Sudbury facing BC High at 4:30 p.m. The day ends with Division 2 baseball as Milton takes on King Philip at 7 p.m.
