Russian Missiles and Drones Hit Kyiv Overnight, Killing 1 and Injuring 8

October 19, 2026 · U.S. News & World Report

Russia launched a massive air attack on Ukraine's capital using hundreds of drones and multiple missiles, damaging hospitals, schools, and a metro station.

Russia attacked the city of Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, overnight on Monday with ballistic missiles and drones. The strike killed one person and injured eight others. Buildings and important infrastructure were damaged across three different parts of the city. Local officials reported the attack and shared details about the destruction it caused.

Ukraine's Air Force said Russia launched a very large air attack that night. It included ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and 269 drones in total. Ukrainian air defenses were able to shoot down or stop 243 drones and four missiles. Strikes were recorded at 25 locations, and debris from downed targets fell in 8 locations.

Russia's Defense Ministry called the operation a 'massive strike.' They said their forces used high-precision ground-based weapons and attack drones. Russia claimed it was targeting military-related sites in Ukraine, including places where drone parts and missiles were stored.

In the Desnianskyi district of Kyiv, a private medical clinic and one of the city's metro stations were damaged. The metro station is part of the subway system that many people in Kyiv use every day. Officials reported the damage through a post on Telegram, a messaging app widely used in Ukraine.

In another part of the city called the Dniprovskyi district, schools and a sports facility were hit by falling debris. The debris landed in open areas near these buildings. Other non-residential buildings in the area were also struck by falling wreckage from the downed drones and missiles.

In the Solomianskyi district, a fire started on the third floor of a medical facility inside a large 25-story apartment building. Emergency workers arrived and put out the fire before it spread further. Windows in nearby buildings and a shopping center were also broken by the force of the blasts.

Russia also said its forces struck a large cargo ship at sea. The ship was about 130 kilometers, or 80 miles, southwest of the port city of Odesa. Russia claimed the ship was carrying military equipment and other goods that could be used for military purposes.

Strikes were recorded at 25 locations, and debris from downed targets fell in 8 locations.
