Rocket Issues Delay First-Ever Private Mission to Venus
A team of scientists and a private rocket company want to search for signs of life in Venus's clouds, but their launch is on hold while they wait for a new rocket to be ready.
Scientists at MIT and a private company called Rocket Lab are working together to explore Venus. Their mission would be the first largely privately funded robotic trip to the planet. The goal is to look for possible signs of life in Venus's thick, cloudy atmosphere. But the mission is delayed because the rocket they need is not ready yet.
The mission is called the Rocket Lab Mission to Venus. It is part of a series of planned missions nicknamed the 'Morning Star Missions.' Sara Seager, a professor of planetary science at MIT, is leading the science work. She says the team is ready on their end but is waiting on the rocket, called Neutron, to be approved for flight.
Neutron was supposed to make its first launch in 2024, but that has not happened. The rocket still needs to complete a series of safety and qualification tests. Its first flight will lift off from Wallops Island, Virginia. Until those tests are done, the Venus probe must wait on the ground.
The probe itself looks like a small cone and is designed to fly through Venus's atmosphere. It carries a tool called an autofluorescence nephelometer, or AFN, which can measure tiny particles in the clouds. Scientists want to know the size, shape, and makeup of those particles. They hope the AFN will help them find organic molecules — chemicals that are connected to life.
Important parts of the probe are already built. NASA's Ames Research Center created a tough heat shield called HEEET that can handle temperatures up to 4,500 degrees Fahrenheit. NASA gave the heat shield to Rocket Lab in March 2025. The full probe is now stored at Rocket Lab's headquarters in Long Beach, California.
Venus doesn't look friendly — its surface is scorching hot and has been ruined by a runaway greenhouse effect. But scientists think the clouds high above the surface might be a different story. Seager's team recently published research showing that small chains of amino acids can survive in very acidic conditions like those in Venus's clouds. This suggests that life might be able to exist there, even if the surface cannot support it.
Seager's team is not stopping with just one mission. They plan to send follow-up missions to Venus to search for more complex organic molecules. One future idea is a 16-foot-wide balloon that would float through Venus's clouds for a full week. They are also building tiny sensors, including some made from carbon nanotubes, to detect specific molecules of interest.
Other scientists share the team's excitement, even with the delays. Paul Byrne, a professor at the University of Washington in St. Louis, says delays are common in space exploration — especially for new kinds of missions. 'I continue to have high hopes for this mission,' he said. He believes this mission could show what private companies are capable of in space.
"If you find life in the clouds of Venus, then you can pretty much assume that life is quite prevalent throughout the universe."
