Racecourse Kop: Why a New Stand Has Become a Symbol for Wrexham

August 23, 2026 · BBC

A massive new grandstand at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground is showing the world just how far the club has come.

A brand-new stand is rising at Wrexham FC's Racecourse Ground, and fans can barely believe their eyes. The new Kop stand is being built with steel, concrete, and big dreams. It shows just how much this Welsh soccer club has grown in just a few years. Wrexham has gone from a lower-league team to one of the most talked-about clubs in the world.

Just a year ago, the spot where the new stand is going up was nothing but an empty dirt lot. Now, more than 1,500 tonnes of steel are in place, and the structure is growing fast. Workers have put in the foundations and the main frame of the stand. People walking past the ground can already see how huge it is going to be.

One of the coolest features of the new Kop will be a giant LED screen. The screen will be nearly 7 metres tall and 18 metres wide. Fans watching the game from the stand will have a great view of replays and match information. Sharp-eyed supporters already spotted the large steel frame that will hold the screen during a recent match against Watford.

The new stand will also include much more than just seats. Players will get brand-new dressing rooms and a new tunnel closer to the historic Turf pub, where players used to get changed long ago. There will also be new media facilities for journalists and a fan plaza right next to the railway station. Club leaders want the plaza to feel like a true gateway into the city of Wrexham.

Head coach Phil Parkinson could not hide his excitement about the project. He said he took a walk around the ground before the Watford match and was struck by how far the build had come. "Everyone's been waiting a long time for the development of the Kop and now, over the last six months or so, we've all seen it emerging out of the ground," he said. Parkinson added that it is going to be amazing once fans can finally fill the seats.

There is a chance that a small number of fans could sit in part of the new stand before this season ends. However, the stand will not be fully open with all its features until next season. The club is hoping that next season could even be in the Premier League, England's top division. Wrexham are currently two points better off than they were at the same point last season, so the team is on track.

The designers also planned ahead when building the Kop. The stand's layout leaves room for even more changes to the rest of the Racecourse Ground in the future. Club leaders have said that a stadium holding 30,000 fans is a real possibility one day. The rising stand is a clear sign that Wrexham's ambitions are only getting bigger.

"It's very impressive. We're pleased at the progress of that and it's going to be amazing when we'll be able to get supporters into it."
