Doctor Suspended After Being Charged with Serious Crime
A Queensland surgeon who dated a former premier can no longer practice medicine while facing charges.
A doctor in Queensland, Australia has been suspended from his job after being charged with serious crimes. Dr. Vahid Reza Adib is a surgeon who performs operations to help people lose weight. He was charged with rape and other serious crimes in May. The health department in Queensland said he cannot work as a doctor while these charges are being dealt with.
Dr. Adib became well-known because he was dating Annastacia Palaszczuk, who used to be the premier of Queensland. A premier is like the leader of a state. They started dating when she was very popular as a leader. This relationship put Dr. Adib in the news and made him famous.
The police say that Dr. Adib attacked a woman in her 30s at a house in March. They investigated the case for about a month before charging him. The police went to the house and took items as evidence. Dr. Adib was charged with three counts of rape, two counts of keeping someone against their will, and one count of sexual assault.
Dr. Adib worked at Wesley Hospital in Brisbane, which is a private hospital. He ran a clinic that helped people who were very overweight. His website said he had done more than 20,000 operations during his career. He has been working as a surgeon in Brisbane since the mid-1990s.
The Queensland health department suspended Dr. Adib's license on June 2nd. This means he cannot see patients or do any medical work. The suspension will stay in place until either the health department changes its mind or a special court decides differently. For now, he is not allowed to practice medicine at all.
