Preliminary Report Reveals Cause of Death for Sen. Lindsey Graham

July 12, 2026 · Los Angeles Times

The longtime Republican senator from South Carolina died suddenly from a tear in a major blood vessel near his heart.

Senator Lindsey Graham, a well-known Republican from South Carolina, died suddenly on Saturday night after suffering a serious heart condition called an aortic dissection. He was 71 years old and had served in the U.S. Senate for more than two decades. His office announced his death on Sunday, shortly after he had returned to Washington, D.C., from a trip to Ukraine. The news shocked many people across the country and in the U.S. government.

A preliminary report from the medical examiner for Washington, D.C., found that Graham died from an aortic dissection caused by a disease that hardens and narrows the arteries. An aortic dissection happens when a tear forms in the wall of the aorta, which is the large blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart. According to the Mayo Clinic, this condition is not very common, and its symptoms are sometimes confused with other health problems. It most often affects men in their 60s and 70s, and it can be fatal if blood leaks outside the artery.

Graham had a long and impressive career before and during his time in the Senate. He served as a lawyer in the U.S. Air Force and rose to the rank of colonel. He later became the chief prosecutor for the Air Force in Europe, which is a very high-level legal job. In 2002, he was first elected to the Senate, where he served South Carolina for more than 20 years.

Graham also ran for president in 2016, seeking the Republican nomination. At first, he was a strong critic of Donald Trump during the election. Over time, though, Graham became one of Trump's closest and most loyal supporters in the Senate. This change surprised many people who had watched Graham speak out against Trump early on.

Former President Donald Trump shared his sadness on his social media platform, Truth Social, on Sunday. He called Graham 'one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known' and said he was 'a true American Patriot.' Trump also called into several Sunday news programs to talk about Graham's death. He said he had spoken with Graham on Saturday evening, and that the senator told him he was feeling 'tired.'

Vice President JD Vance also remembered Graham in a post on the social media platform X. He recalled a time when he and Graham got into a loud argument over a bill to fund the war in Ukraine. Later that same day, Vance wrote, Graham turned around and strongly supported a transportation bill that Vance cared about. Vance said that moment showed exactly who Graham was — someone who fought hard for his beliefs but could also support others when it mattered.

Graham came from humble beginnings and was known to be a C student in high school. He was the first person in his family to go to college, attending the University of South Carolina. Sadly, his mother died while he was in college, and his father died of a heart attack during Graham's first semester of law school. Despite these hardships, he went on to have a long career in the military and in government.

Graham had been scheduled to appear on NBC's 'Meet the Press' on Sunday to talk about his recent trip to Ukraine. Instead, President Trump appeared in his place and said Graham had been 'like a member of the family.' The senator's sudden passing left many in Washington and across the nation mourning the loss of a figure who had shaped American politics for more than two decades.

"He fought like hell for the things he believed in, and he was just as willing to go to bat for you when it counted."
