California Votes for New Governor and Los Angeles Mayor

June 2, 2026 · The Wall Street Journal

Close races mean results could take days or weeks to count all the mail-in ballots.

People in California voted on Tuesday for a new governor and a new mayor of Los Angeles. The races are very close, so it might take several days or weeks to know who won. California sends ballots to all voters by mail, and election workers need time to count them all. These two elections have been full of surprises and unexpected candidates.

The race for governor has three main candidates fighting for two spots. Xavier Becerra is a Democrat who used to work for the government. Tom Steyer is also a Democrat and a very rich businessman. Steve Hilton is a Republican who used to be on Fox News.

The Los Angeles mayor's race also has three top candidates. Karen Bass is the current mayor and a Democrat who is 72 years old. Spencer Pratt is 42 years old and was on a reality TV show called 'The Hills.' Nithya Raman is 44 years old and works on the city council.

Spencer Pratt has surprised many people by doing so well in the mayor's race. He lost his own house in a big fire this year. He says the city government did a bad job dealing with fires and homelessness. President Trump said he likes Pratt and wants him to do well.

Tom Steyer has spent more than $200 million of his own money on his campaign. He has used $175 million just on TV ads. Even with all that money, the race is still very close between the three main candidates.

It took more than a week for Bass to finally be declared the winner of the 2022 mayor's runoff election.
