PM Wong to visit Jakarta for the Singapore-Indonesia Leaders' Retreat on July 6
Singapore's prime minister will meet Indonesia's president to strengthen ties and explore new areas of cooperation.
Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong will travel to Jakarta, Indonesia on July 6 to meet President Prabowo Subianto. The two leaders will hold what is called the Singapore-Indonesia Leaders' Retreat. This yearly meeting is the most important face-to-face event between the leaders of the two countries. At the retreat, they are expected to show their support for the strong friendship between Singapore and Indonesia.
The retreat will be hosted by President Prabowo and will be the second time PM Wong and President Prabowo have held this kind of meeting. The first one was held in Singapore in June 2025. The Prime Minister's Office shared this news in a statement on July 5. The annual Leaders' Retreat brings together not just the two top leaders, but also senior ministers from both countries.
At the meeting, PM Wong and President Prabowo are expected to talk about ways to work more closely together. They will get updates on projects that started after their last retreat. The leaders will also share their thoughts on what is happening in the region and around the world. Both sides want to find new ways to help each other grow and improve.
Singapore and Indonesia are already partners in many areas, like trade, business investment, and defence. But now they are also working together on newer topics. These include the green economy, clean energy, carbon capture and storage, artificial intelligence, and digital connectivity. These new areas show how the two countries are thinking about the future.
The last Leaders' Retreat held in Indonesia was in April 2024. At that time, then Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong met then President Joko Widodo at the Bogor Presidential Palace. Both PM Wong and President Prabowo were also present at that meeting. This year's retreat continues that tradition of strong cooperation.
Singapore is also an important source of money for Indonesia's economy. In 2025, Singapore was Indonesia's top source of foreign direct investment, putting in US$17.4 billion. Foreign direct investment means money that businesses from one country put into another country to help it grow. This shows just how closely linked the two countries' economies are.
PM Wong will be joined by several senior ministers on the trip. They include Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong, Minister for Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Defence Chan Chun Sing, and other key ministers. While PM Wong is away, Minister K Shanmugam will serve as acting prime minister back in Singapore. This ensures the country's government keeps running smoothly during the visit.
The Leaders' Retreat reaffirms the deep and enduring bilateral ties between Singapore and Indonesia, and the commitment by both governments to deepening bilateral cooperation.
