Pennsylvania Reports Its Third Death Linked to Measles This Year

The 40-year-old woman lived in Jefferson County, a rural area about 50 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. Pennsylvania had two other measles-related deaths earlier this year, and both of those involved babies. Those deaths both happened in August. In one case, a coroner said measles itself was the direct cause of death. The other case was more complicated, with measles listed as an important condition at the time of death but not the main cause.
One of the infants who died was a baby boy who was born with a ruptured spleen. The boy had measles, but doctors said the measles did not cause the spleen to rupture. Lancaster County Coroner Dr. Stephen Diamantoni explained that measles was listed as a 'significant condition' at the time of the boy's death, meaning it was a serious health factor even if it wasn't the direct cause.
The other baby who died was a 6-week-old girl. She was born with a rare genetic condition called Amish lethal microcephaly, which causes an unusually small head and an underdeveloped brain. Children born with this condition usually live for six months or less. Diamantoni told the Associated Press that this baby girl died directly because of measles.
Neither baby had been vaccinated against measles, but that was not because their families chose not to vaccinate them. The first dose of the measles vaccine is usually given to children around their first birthday, so both infants were simply too young to receive it. This shows that very young babies are especially at risk because they cannot be protected by the vaccine yet.
As of last Friday, Pennsylvania had recorded 676 measles cases spread across 37 of the state's 67 counties. Out of those cases, 124 people needed to be hospitalized. Health officials also noted that four people who had been vaccinated still got measles, though vaccination greatly lowers the risk of getting the disease.
The three deaths reported by Pennsylvania officials do not match the numbers kept by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, also known as the CDC. The CDC's website stated on Sunday that it had no death records from 2026 showing measles as the underlying cause of death.
