Outside Iran vs. Egypt, the World Cup Was Almost Beside the Point

June 26, 2026 · USA Today

Protesters and Pride supporters filled the streets of Seattle, turning a World Cup match into a stage for much bigger conversations.

On Friday, Iran played Egypt in a key 2026 World Cup group-stage match in Seattle. Iran needed at least a draw to stay in the tournament. But for many Iranian fans and Iranian-Americans gathered outside the stadium, the game itself was not the main topic. They were there to speak out against the Iranian government, which many of them say does not represent the people of Iran.

Hundreds of protesters marched around the stadium before the match. Many carried the Iranian flag from before 1979, which features a golden lion and sun symbol. That flag is very different from today's Iranian flag, which replaced the lion and sun with a red emblem that includes the words "Allāhu akbar," meaning "God is great." The older flag has become a symbol of protest against Iran's current government. FIFA, the organization that runs the World Cup, banned the pre-1979 flag from official stadium venues because it considers the flag a political symbol.

An Iranian-American woman named Maryam, who did not share her last name, explained why she was protesting. She said she believes the Iranian national team is used to support the country's government, even if the players do not say so openly. "We (fans) are the voice of the people of Iran," Maryam said, "not the regime." A regime is a government that controls a country, often with strict rules.

Not all Iranian fans outside the stadium agreed with the protesters. A man named Ali, who also did not share his last name, came to support the Iranian soccer team. He said fans should be able to root for the team without being seen as supporters of the government. However, his wife disagreed with him. She said the current flag and government do not represent her, and she was at the game to protest against the regime.

The Iran-Egypt game had already drawn extra attention because local organizers named it the "Pride Match." This name was chosen to match Seattle's Pride weekend celebrations, which honor the LGBTQ+ community. The name caused some controversy because both Iran and Egypt have laws that criminalize same-sex relationships. Still, FIFA said rainbow Pride flags would be allowed inside the stadium and called the World Cup an "inclusive event" open to everyone.

About five miles from the stadium, a Pride festival called the Ballard Regnbue Pride Festival was underway. The all-day event had big screens showing the World Cup, a live DJ, and drag performances. A drag performer who went by the name Sativa the Queen spoke about the match. "It's such an interesting game to be the Pride Match," they said. "But as Seattleites, we are such an accepting city, and we welcome people of all genders, all sexualities and sexual orientations."

The Iranian national team has also faced challenges off the field. Iran and the United States have been in a state of conflict since February. Because of this, one Iranian player and some team staff members were denied visas, which are official documents that allow people to enter a country. The team's base camp is located in Mexico, even though all three of its group-stage games are being played in the United States.

In the end, the streets of Seattle on Friday were filled with more than just soccer fans. There were protesters waving historic flags, Pride supporters celebrating with music and performances, and fans divided over what it means to cheer for a national team. The World Cup brought them all together in one place, but their reasons for being there were very different.

"We (fans) are the voice of the people of Iran, not the regime."
