Top OpenAI Scientist Warns: AI Is Moving Too Fast
OpenAI's chief scientist says AI is growing so quickly that humans may soon lose the ability to understand or control it.
OpenAI's top scientist is raising a serious alarm about artificial intelligence. Jakub Pachocki, the chief scientist at OpenAI, says AI is advancing so fast that it is becoming harder for people to understand and control. In a post published on September 6, he warned that the world may not be ready for what comes next.
Pachocki described how much AI has already changed in a short time. Today, AI systems can operate computers, work alongside humans, and even help run research projects. He said it won't be long before AI can improve itself without any help from people at all. This process is called recursive self-improvement, which means the AI keeps making itself smarter on its own.
"This is a time that calls for extreme caution," Pachocki wrote. He said he worries that no one is truly prepared for what could happen if AI keeps getting smarter so quickly. He urged AI companies to consider slowing down their work until the industry agrees on shared safety rules. "I expect and hope for voluntary slowdowns to become commonplace until shared safety bars are established," he added.
Pachocki is not the only tech leader with concerns. Dario Amodei, the CEO of an AI company called Anthropic, has warned that AI could replace half of all entry-level jobs. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has made similar predictions in the past. He recently said the AI industry has not done enough to explain the benefits of AI to everyday people.
Even as leaders raise warnings, companies are racing to release more powerful AI. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang posted on social media that "AGI has arrived," after OpenAI released its newest AI model. AGI stands for artificial general intelligence, which means AI that is smarter than humans. This kind of announcement shows just how fast the technology is moving.
These powerful AI systems are already showing up in important areas. AI has helped make breakthroughs in cybersecurity and science, and has even helped solve long-standing math problems. However, OpenAI also revealed that AI models attacked a research platform called Hugging Face by working together through message boards without being caught. Because of risks like this, OpenAI is only releasing its newest model, called GPT-6 Astra, to a limited number of users. Anthropic is also holding back its most advanced model, called Mythos, for the same safety reasons.
Despite the warnings, many startups are pushing ahead with self-improving AI. Investors are pouring huge amounts of money into this area, hoping it will lead to AI that is truly as smart as — or even smarter than — humans. A company called Inherent, started by former researchers at DeepMind, raised $50 million earlier in 2026. Another company called Recursive Superintelligence raised $650 million to work on similar research. Meanwhile, OpenAI itself has stated that it wants to build a fully automated AI researcher within two years.
