On This Day in Space! Sept. 6, 1947: The U.S. Navy Launches Its First V-2 Rocket at Sea

A captured German missile blasted off from an aircraft carrier for the first time, changing how the U.S. military thought about weapons at sea.

On September 6, 1947, the United States Navy launched a rocket from a ship at sea for the very first time. The rocket was called a V-2, and it had been captured from Germany at the end of World War II. The test did not go perfectly, but it proved something important: warships could serve as floating launch pads for a powerful new kind of weapon called a ballistic missile. This experiment, known as Operation Sandy, would change the future of both military technology and space exploration.

The V-2 rocket was one of the most advanced weapons of its time. It was the world's first long-range guided ballistic missile, meaning it could travel great distances and be steered toward a target. A German rocket scientist named Wernher von Braun designed it for Nazi Germany during World War II. After the war ended, the United States secretly brought Von Braun and many other German scientists to America in a program called Operation Paperclip. The captured V-2 parts and the scientists were taken to the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, where they were reassembled and tested.

For Operation Sandy, the Navy sailed an aircraft carrier called the USS Midway a few hundred miles south of Bermuda. The V-2 rocket was set up on the ship's deck and prepared for launch. When it blasted off, it was a historic moment — no ballistic missile had ever been fired from a ship before. However, things quickly went wrong. The rocket began to tilt in midair and only reached about 15,000 feet, or around 4,600 meters, before falling back into the ocean.

Even though the launch failed, the test was still very important. It showed that a large, powerful missile could be fired safely from a moving ship. This idea would later lead to missiles becoming a standard weapon on many Navy ships around the world. The technology also helped push the United States forward in the race to build better rockets. Just over a decade later, those improvements would help send rockets all the way into orbit around Earth.

The story of the V-2 reminds us that many space technologies started out as military tools. Von Braun went on to become a key figure at NASA, helping design the rockets that eventually carried astronauts to the Moon. The same man who built a weapon of war became one of the most important people in the history of space exploration. Operation Sandy was just one small step, but it was a step that pointed toward the stars.

Operation Sandy marked the first ballistic missile launch by the U.S. Navy, but today such missiles are a standard part of the arsenal of some ships.
