Ocasio-Cortez Says She Is Freezing Her Eggs

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York shared a personal announcement on social media last Saturday night. The 36-year-old Democrat said she has decided to freeze her eggs. She posted several video clips explaining her choice, even though she admitted there was a "political risk" in sharing such private news. She said she wanted to show that women can make many different choices in their lives.

Ocasio-Cortez said she does not usually talk about her personal life in public. But she felt this was important enough to share. "Usually I keep my private life quite private, but I have made the decision to start freezing my eggs," she said in one of her videos. She also said that sharing the news comes with what she called a "political tax," but that it would not change her mind.

Egg freezing is a medical process that can take a lot of time and money. It is not always paid for by health insurance. Women who go through the process must give themselves hormone shots every day for about 10 days, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. They also need several ultrasound checkups and regular blood tests before a doctor removes the mature eggs through a small surgery.

Ocasio-Cortez said she knows she is in a "very privileged position" to be able to make this choice. Not everyone can afford egg freezing, though she noted that advances in technology have made it a little more affordable than it used to be. She called it "badass" that she would be giving herself shots in a green room backstage. She clearly wanted people to know she was not embarrassed by her decision.

On Sunday morning, she spoke about her announcement on the ABC News show "This Week." She said that in today's political climate, where she believes the government is limiting reproductive care for women, leaders need to have open conversations about these topics. She mentioned issues ranging from abortion rights to healthy pregnancies. She felt that speaking up was part of her job as a lawmaker.

Ocasio-Cortez has long been a supporter of abortion rights. In July 2022, she helped sponsor a bill called the Women's Health Protection Act, which passed in the House of Representatives. The bill was meant to protect abortion rights after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. That same month, she and other members of Congress were arrested at an abortion rights rally outside the Supreme Court in Washington.

The congresswoman also pointed out that women face a kind of pressure at work that men simply do not. She said that when women run for office or apply for jobs, people often wonder quietly whether they plan to have children. She wanted to shine a light on this double standard between men and women. Her announcement sparked a wider conversation about how women are treated differently in public life.
