NYC Mayor Creates Website to Help Kids Find Fun Summer Activities
New interactive site connects young people with free programs to keep them safe during summer months.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is launching a new website to help kids find fun things to do this summer. The website is called "Summer in NYC" and will connect young people with free activities around the city. City leaders hope these programs will help keep kids safe during the summer months. The website launches on Wednesday morning at 10 a.m.
Every summer, there is usually more gun violence in cities across America. This happens partly because more kids are outside without adult supervision during summer break. Police say New York City currently has fewer shootings and murders than before. However, city leaders want to prevent any increase in violence this summer.
The new website will be easy for teens and parents to use. People can search for programs by typing in their age, zip code, and interests. They can also choose how far they are willing to travel to join activities. The site offers many different options for young people to explore.
Kids can find photography classes, painting lessons, and sports leagues through the website. There are also summer job opportunities and mental health resources available. The site includes information about free summer meals too. It even lists FIFA World Cup watch parties happening around the city.
Mayor Mamdani explained why this website is important. "Too often, we tell young people what not to do - but don't tell them what they should do," he said in a statement. He wants young New Yorkers to feel safe and heard by their community. The mayor believes giving kids positive activities will help protect them.
The Office of Neighborhood Safety worked with local groups to create this summer plan. These organizations focus on preventing gun violence in their communities. They understand what young people need to stay safe and engaged during summer break.
This new program started after the mayor talked with three young people from True 2 Life. This group is based on Staten Island and works within the city's Crisis Management System. These young people shared their experiences with gun violence in their neighborhoods.
One member explained how violence builds up during winter months. "People are getting into situations all winter long, and they wait for the summertime to come outside with a gun," the person said. This shows why summer safety programs are so important for preventing violence.
Police are also taking extra steps to keep the city safe this summer. The NYPD will add 2,600 more officers to patrol the streets. These officers will work during late night and early morning hours when violence is more likely to happen. City leaders hope these efforts will prevent any spike in summer violence.
Too often, we tell young people what not to do - but don't tell them what they should do.
