President Trump Makes History at NBA Finals Game in New York

June 8, 2026 · PBS.org

Trump becomes the first sitting U.S. president to attend an NBA Finals game, bringing extra security measures to Madison Square Garden.

President Donald Trump made history when he attended Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden in New York City. He became the first sitting U.S. president to ever watch an NBA Finals game in person. The game was between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs. His visit brought very tight security measures to the famous arena.

The security around Madison Square Garden looked like New Year's Eve in Times Square. Fans had to arrive two hours early to get into the building. They needed to show their tickets at several checkpoints and walk through metal detectors like at the airport. The New York Police Department and Secret Service created a safety zone that covered several city blocks around the arena.

Because of the president's visit, officials had to cancel the outdoor watch party that fans loved. During the playoffs, thousands of Knicks fans had been gathering outside the Garden to watch games together on big screens. The team had won 13 games in a row to reach the Finals for the first time since 1999. They were just two wins away from their first NBA championship since 1973.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch explained the decision at a news conference on Monday. She said the police and Secret Service could not safely support watch parties right outside the Garden when the president was visiting. However, she promised that watch parties would return for Game 4. New Yorkers are used to presidents visiting their city and understand that it means some areas get locked down for safety.

President Trump has attended many major sporting events during his time in office. These visits always create long waits and hassles for fans. Last year at the U.S. Open tennis tournament, thousands of fans missed the start of the championship match because of security delays. Even though officials delayed the match by 30 minutes, many fans still could not get inside in time.

Knicks center Mitchell Robinson was asked what he thought about Trump attending the game. He said it was 'cool, I guess' but added that the team could still play well no matter who was watching. Mayor Zohran Mamdani and other important officials were also expected to attend the game on Monday night.

Getting tickets to see the Knicks play was already very expensive for fans. The cheapest tickets cost more than $6,000, which is more than most people pay for rent in New York each month. The best seats cost tens of thousands of dollars. Mayor Mamdani said he bought his ticket directly from Madison Square Garden for about $1,000.

Because tickets were so expensive, many fans crowded into bars and streets around the city to watch the game. The watch party near the Garden had become a huge event throughout the playoffs. With Trump attending, officials moved the watch party several blocks away to Bryant Park, outside the security zone. Knicks guard Jose Alvarado, who grew up in New York, talked about how fans would adapt and always find ways to support their team.

We are looking forward to bringing back watch parties for Game 4.
