New York City Prepares for Big Traffic Jams During World Cup Soccer Game
Brazil and Morocco will play soccer in New Jersey, but New York will close streets and limit trains to help fans get there safely.
New York City will have major traffic problems on Saturday because of a big soccer game. Brazil will play Morocco in the FIFA Men's World Cup at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The game starts at 6 p.m., but traffic changes will begin much earlier. City leaders are warning people to expect delays and plan different routes.
The biggest changes will happen around Penn Station in Manhattan. This is where many fans will catch trains to get to the soccer stadium. NJ Transit service at Penn Station New York will be limited to ticketholders going to the Brazil-Morocco match from 1:25 p.m.-5:14 p.m. People who don't have tickets to the game will need to use different trains.
After the game ends, there will be more train problems. Many fans will return to Penn Station at the same time. Some trains that normally come to Manhattan will stop at other stations instead. This will happen from 8:10 p.m. until about 11:22 p.m.
The city will also close several streets around Penn Station. These closures will start at 12 p.m. or earlier to help manage the crowds. Some streets will reopen after 6 p.m. when the game starts. Other streets will stay closed until after 11 p.m. when most fans have gone home.
New York City will also run special shuttle buses to help fans get to the stadium. These buses will pick up people from three different places in Midtown Manhattan. To make room for these shuttle buses, the city will close extra streets and lanes. This includes parts of 42nd Street, Fifth Avenue, and Sixth Avenue.
