North Korea Tests New Missile Launch System

May 26, 2026 · The Straits Times

The country's leader watched as new weapons were tested, despite international bans on such activities.

North Korea tested new missile weapons on May 26, according to the country's state news agency. The tests included a lightweight missile launching system and cruise missiles. North Korea's leader, Kim Jong Un, watched the tests happen. South Korea's military had already reported seeing the missile launches.

South Korea said North Korea fired several missiles off its west coast on May 26. The missiles flew about 80 kilometers before landing. This was the latest in a series of missile tests that North Korea has done in 2026. It was the first time North Korea tested missiles in 37 days.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) gave more details about what was tested. The tests looked at special warheads for tactical ballistic missiles. They also tested 240mm rockets with better navigation systems. These rockets can now fly farther than before.

Kim Jong Un was happy with the test results. He said the new weapon systems show that North Korea's military is getting stronger. The leader also said these weapons show great technical progress. He believes having powerful weapons is necessary for his army's operations.

Photos released by North Korea show a missile launching from a mobile truck. Bright flames and smoke can be seen around the vehicle. Another photo shows Kim Jong Un standing next to the mobile launcher with military officials.

Experts think North Korea is trying to strengthen its position as a nuclear power. By doing many missile tests, the country may be taking advantage of weakening international rules. North Korea wants other countries to accept that it has nuclear weapons.

North Korea is banned by the United Nations from developing nuclear weapons. The country is also not allowed to use ballistic missile technology. However, North Korea has broken these rules many times. The May 26 tests were North Korea's eighth missile test this year.

In April, North Korea tested a ballistic missile with a special warhead. The country said it wanted to check how powerful cluster bomb warheads could be. North Korea continues to develop new weapons despite international pressure to stop.

North Korean leader Mr Kim noted that the "major weapon systems are a clear signal of upgrading of our military force and an event of showing great technical progress".
