No Goals, But Portugal and Colombia Play Out World Cup Thriller in Miami Heat

June 27, 2026 · Reuters

Both teams fought hard in sweltering Florida temperatures, but neither could find the back of the net in a 0–0 draw that kept the crowd on its feet all night.

Portugal and Colombia played to a 0–0 draw on June 27 in their final group-stage match at the World Cup. The game was held at Miami Stadium in front of 64,478 fans. Even though neither team scored, the match was full of energy, near-misses, and big saves. Both teams had already made it to the next round, but first place in Group K was still up for grabs.

Colombia's fans packed the stadium and made it feel like a home game for their team. They cheered loudly for Colombia and whistled every time Portugal had the ball. Portugal coach Roberto Martinez had warned his players this might happen. The noise and energy from the stands pushed Colombia to play with even more confidence.

Colombia was the sharper team for much of the match. Their players moved well together and passed the ball quickly and cleverly. Portugal tried to press and win the ball back, but Colombia's timing and skill made that very difficult. At times, the fast back-and-forth play looked more like a basketball game than soccer.

Portugal found their footing after a water break in the heat. Bruno Fernandes forced goalkeeper Camilo Vargas into a great close-range save. Joao Felix also came close to scoring as the game opened up. These moments showed that Portugal could be dangerous, even if they were struggling to control the match.

Colombia had plenty of chances to win the game, too. The problem was not creating opportunities — it was finishing them. Goalkeeper Diogo Costa was named man of the match for his sharp saves. A goal-line clearance by Ruben Neves also kept Colombia off the scoreboard at a key moment.

The standout player for Colombia was midfielder Jhon Arias. He ran hard, carried the ball forward, and caused problems for Portugal's defense all night. Portugal's coach Martinez made changes at halftime to try to slow him down, but Arias kept finding space. Much of Colombia's best attacking play flowed through him.

Portugal's best chance of the second half came when Cristiano Ronaldo and Joao Felix combined well. However, the move ended with a missed shot and an offside flag. Colombia quickly responded, but Richard Rios could not convert his chance either. The game kept swinging from end to end with no goal at either side.

Deep in added time, Colombia's Davinson Sanchez headed the ball into the net and fans erupted with joy. However, the referee checked VAR and ruled Sanchez was offside by a toe. The stadium groaned, but the roar of the crowd at the final whistle showed how much the fans had enjoyed the spectacle. Both coaches agreed it had been one of the most intense games of the tournament so far.

"Facing an opponent like that, with this style of football, our fans and this heat — it felt like we were in Barranquilla."
