Sports Analyst Blames Eagles Coach for Bad Loss to Bears
Nick Wright says poor coaching decisions cost Philadelphia the game against Chicago.
Sports analyst Nick Wright says Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni made big coaching mistakes during the team's 27–7 loss to the Chicago Bears on Monday night. Wright, who works for Fox Sports, shared his thoughts on his podcast the day after the game. He believes that if the two teams had swapped head coaches, the Eagles would have won instead of lost.
Wright praised Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson for doing a great job with his backup quarterback, Case Keenum. Keenum was the team's third-string quarterback, meaning two other quarterbacks were ahead of him on the depth chart. Even so, Wright called Johnson's game plan a 'masterclass,' which means an example of excellent work. He said Sirianni, on the other hand, was 'out to lunch the entire game.'
One of Wright's biggest complaints was about how Sirianni handled a key moment in the second quarter. Eagles starting quarterback Jalen Hurts had to leave the field briefly to be checked for a possible concussion. A concussion is a brain injury that can happen after a hard hit. During that time, backup quarterback Andy Dalton was sent in to play.
Instead of slowing things down to give Hurts more time to get cleared, Wright says the Eagles kept playing at a fast pace. Dalton then threw an interception in the end zone, ending a long drive of 12 plays and 95 yards without scoring any points. Wright argued that Sirianni should have called a timeout to buy Hurts extra time to return.
Wright felt that this one bad decision may have changed the entire game. Before the interception, the Eagles had a chance to tie the score with a touchdown. Wright said it was 'unacceptable game management,' meaning Sirianni failed at one of a head coach's most important jobs. He even suggested that Eagles general manager Howie Roseman should start questioning whether Sirianni is the right coach for the team.
Wright also said he believed Hurts himself could not believe what was happening on the sideline. He thinks the quarterback was shocked that his team was rushing through plays while he was still being evaluated in the medical tent. Wright said that kind of awareness and game sense is exactly what a head coach needs to have — and that Sirianni showed none of it on Monday night.
