Nobel Peace Prize, Execution Livestream, and Hurricane Isaias: Today's Top Stories

October 9, 2026 · AP NEWS

A human rights champion wins the world's most famous peace award, a military execution will be broadcast live, and a powerful hurricane closes in on the Gulf Coast.

Three big stories are making headlines today. A South African judge named Navi Pillay won the Nobel Peace Prize for her work in international justice. The U.S. Pentagon announced that the execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan will be shown live on video. And Hurricane Isaias is heading toward the Gulf Coast of the United States, bringing dangerous winds and flooding.

Navi Pillay is a judge from South Africa who spent many years working in international law and human rights. She once served as the top human rights official at the United Nations. On Friday, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to protect people's rights and promote peace around the world.

Her award is seen as a message aimed at leaders who have pushed back against international law. Both U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have rejected the findings of a U.N. committee that Pillay led. That committee concluded that Israel committed genocide in Gaza, a finding both leaders strongly disagreed with. Pillay has denied claims that she was biased or unfair in her work.

The prize also brings new attention to tensions between the Trump administration and the International Criminal Court, or ICC. The U.S. has already placed sanctions — penalties that limit what people can do — on 13 ICC staff members, including judges and prosecutors. The head of the Norwegian Nobel Committee said the award was a message to anyone trying to weaken the international systems that help keep the world peaceful.

In 2009, a U.S. Army soldier named Nidal Malik Hasan opened fire at Fort Hood, a military base in Texas. He killed 13 people and wounded 32 others. He was convicted of murder and sentenced to death. Now, the Pentagon says his execution by firing squad will be shown live to the public.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced the plan on a conservative TV channel, saying people would be able to watch the execution. This would be the first military execution in more than 65 years, making the decision especially surprising to many people. A firing squad is considered a violent method of execution, and the public nature of the event has raised serious questions about how the death penalty is carried out in the United States.

This news comes after another execution made headlines recently. In Tennessee, an execution went badly wrong when a method called lethal injection did not work as planned. Together, these events have sparked a national debate about whether public executions are appropriate and how the government should handle the death penalty.

Hurricane Isaias is a powerful storm that is approaching the southern United States. The governors of Florida and Alabama declared states of emergency in dozens of counties to help people prepare. The storm was a Category 2 hurricane with winds of up to 105 miles per hour, and it was expected to make landfall late Friday near the Alabama-Florida border.

Residents in the area began boarding up windows and stacking sandbags to protect their homes from floodwaters. Thousands of National Guard soldiers were also sent to the region to help keep people safe. The National Weather Service warned that the storm could bring life-threatening storm surges — walls of water pushed inland by the storm — especially around Pensacola Bay.

Forecasters were also tracking another storm called Hurricane Simon, which was expected to grow into a powerful Category 4 hurricane. Atlantic hurricanes that start with the letter 'I' have a history of causing serious damage and loss of life. People along the Gulf Coast were urged to follow emergency instructions and move to safer areas if needed.

We'll make sure that people are able to watch it, that it's public.
