NASA Space Telescope Set to Launch After Surviving Trump Budget Cuts

The Nancy Grace Roman telescope escaped two attempts to cancel it and will now search for planets and cosmic secrets from a million miles away.

A powerful new NASA space telescope is ready to launch from Florida on Sunday morning. Called the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, it cost $4.3 billion and took nearly 10 years to build. The telescope will travel about one million miles from Earth to study planets beyond our solar system and explore mysteries of the universe. Its launch was planned for 7:26 a.m. ET from Kennedy Space Center, as long as the weather cooperates.

The Roman telescope survived two attempts by the Trump administration to cut its funding and cancel the project. Congress stepped in both times and kept the money flowing. Most recently, lawmakers restored NASA's budget to $24.4 billion for 2026 after the White House proposed what some experts called 'extinction level cuts' to NASA's science programs. The Trump administration is now pushing for another 23% cut to NASA's overall budget for 2027, which could end more than 50 missions.

Roman is named after Nancy Grace Roman, NASA's first chief of astronomy, who died in 2018. She was a pioneer for women in science, and the telescope honors her lifetime of work. The telescope is often compared to the famous Hubble Space Telescope, but Roman is much more powerful. It can see the same level of detail as Hubble, but its view of the sky is at least 100 times wider.

Roman's camera has 300 megapixels and uses infrared light to capture images. Each photo will show a patch of sky about 1.5 times larger than a full moon appears from Earth. The telescope also carries a special tool called a coronagraph, which blocks out the bright glare of stars. This makes it much easier to photograph planets orbiting those stars in clear detail.

Scientists are especially excited about Roman's ability to find exoplanets, which are planets outside our solar system. NASA says Roman will reveal giant worlds that are older, colder, and in closer orbits than most planets found by other telescopes. Roman will also study dark matter, dark energy, and how the universe is structured. All of its images will be shared with the public right away, giving both scientists and amateur astronomers the chance to explore the data.

Roman will travel to a spot in space called Lagrange point 2, which scientists sometimes call a 'parking spot.' It is the same general area where the James Webb Space Telescope operates, though the two will stay far apart. Roman is not meant to replace Hubble or Webb. Instead, it is designed to work alongside them, finding interesting targets for the other telescopes to study in greater detail.

Julie McEnery, NASA's senior project scientist for Roman, explained why the telescope matters so much. She said one big reason it was built is the discovery that the universe is expanding faster and faster over time. She compared it to throwing a ball into the air and watching it fly away instead of coming back down. 'There's something really fundamental that we don't understand about the nature of our universe itself,' she said, 'and Roman is purpose-built to address these questions.'

NASA expects Roman's first images to arrive in early 2027, after several months of tests and adjustments in its final orbit. The telescope's main mission is planned to last five years but could be extended to ten. Sunday's launch also marks the final flight of SpaceX's Falcon Heavy rocket. Elon Musk's company is retiring the Falcon Heavy to focus on its new Starship rocket, which is designed to one day carry astronauts to Mars.

"From objects in our outer solar system and exploding stars, to growing black holes and galaxies by the billions, very little will be beyond Roman's reach."
