NASA Plans to Build Moon Base in Three Steps

May 27, 2026 · Newsweek

Space agency shows how robots, astronauts, and new technology will create humanity's first lunar home.

NASA has shared its plan to build a permanent base on the Moon. The space agency wants to create humanity's first lunar home near the Moon's South Pole. This project will happen in three main phases over the next decade. NASA released new pictures showing what the Moon base might look like.

The United States is focusing more on Moon missions as other countries like China also plan space projects. NASA says the Moon base will be home base for Artemis astronauts who will live and work at humanity's first lunar outpost. The agency is working with teams from around the world to make this dream come true.

The first phase will run until 2029 and focus on sending robots to the Moon. These machines will test new technology and prepare the area for humans. Robotic landers, power systems, and rovers will do most of the early work on the lunar surface.

The second phase will last from 2029 to 2032. During this time, NASA will send semi-permanent buildings and early living systems to the Moon. A special pressurized rover made by Japan will help astronauts travel farther and stay longer. This rover can support two astronauts for up to 30 days.

The final phase begins in 2032 and continues beyond. This is when the Moon base becomes fully active with astronauts living there full-time. NASA says crews will rotate regularly and stay for long missions. The base will also serve as a starting point for trips to Mars.

This is when living and working on the Moon becomes a reality.
