Naperville News Digest: College Musical, Food Drives, and Election Monitors
North Central College stages a Broadway musical, local groups collect food for families in need, and officials watch the polls on Election Day.
The Department of Theatre at North Central College will perform 'Fun Home,' a musical based on a graphic novel by Alison Bechdel. Shows run at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, November 5–7, and at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, November 7–8. The theater is at Meiley-Swallow Hall, 31 S. Ellsworth St. Tickets cost $14 for adults and are free for college students, teachers, and staff. You can buy tickets at www.northcentralcollege.edu/show.
The story follows the author as a child growing up near her family's funeral home. The play deals with serious topics like suicide, homophobia, and predatory behavior, so it may not be right for younger viewers. Parents should learn about the show before deciding if it is a good fit for their children.
The cast includes ten North Central College students, such as Josette Falzone, Autumn Dunn, Dana Cavada, and Allison Roach. These performers have been working hard to bring the story to life on stage. The show is a great example of the talent at the college's theater program.
The Cress Creek Garden Club of Naperville is looking for students who want to apply for a scholarship. The club gives money to students who study subjects like landscape design, floral design, environmental science, and horticulture, which is the science of growing plants. Applications are due by March 1, and winners will be honored at a luncheon in June. Students can find more information at www.cresscreekgardenclub.org.
Several local groups are collecting non-perishable food in early November to help the West Suburban Community Food Pantry. This pantry gives food to families in DuPage and Will counties who do not have enough to eat. Donations will be accepted at different times and places from November 1 through November 9. Most needed items include canned tuna and chicken, peanut butter, cereal, rice, pasta, and canned fruits and vegetables.
The DuPage County State's Attorney's Office will be watching polling places on Election Day, Tuesday, November 3. Prosecutors and investigators will be on duty from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. to check any reports of problems at voting locations. Local police and sheriff's deputies will also be ready to respond if anything goes wrong. Anyone with concerns can call the county clerk at 630-407-5600 or the Election Hotline at 630-407-8118.
