Doctor Says Weight Loss Shots for Kids Is Wrong Approach

June 4, 2026 · The Independent

England's top doctor wants to prevent childhood obesity instead of treating it with medicine later.

England's chief medical officer says it is wrong to let children become obese and then give them weight loss shots as adults. Professor Sir Chris Whitty called this approach 'morally unreasonable' during a recent podcast interview. He believes the country should focus on preventing childhood obesity instead of treating it with medicine later. Whitty warned that England could be seen as having 'failed catastrophically' on this important health issue.

Whitty compared childhood obesity to other health problems the country has tackled. He said England has done well with smoking prevention and air pollution control. However, he thinks the country is failing when it comes to helping children maintain healthy weights. The doctor is especially worried about children in poor areas who are more likely to become obese.

Recent health surveys show the serious nature of this problem. About 15 percent of children between ages 2 and 15 are currently living with obesity in England. The numbers get worse as children get older, with 17 percent of teenagers aged 13 to 15 being obese. The problem is much worse in poor areas compared to wealthy areas.

In the richest parts of England, only 8 percent of children aged 11 to 15 are obese. But in the poorest areas, that number jumps to 30 percent. This big difference shows how poverty affects children's health and access to healthy food and exercise opportunities. Whitty said childhood obesity numbers are getting worse instead of better.

Whitty strongly criticized the idea of using weight loss drugs as the main solution. These special medicines help people lose weight by affecting their appetite. He said it would be wrong to let children become obese and then put them on these drugs for life starting at age 18. The doctor believes this approach doesn't address the real problem of preventing obesity in the first place.

I think we'll be seen to have failed, and if we are not careful, fail catastrophically... about childhood obesity.
