Mike Fox's Love for the Tar Heels Never Faded — Now He's Cheering for a Title

June 18, 2026 · AP NEWS

The retired North Carolina baseball coach is watching from the stands as the team he built chases the one trophy that got away.

Mike Fox spent decades helping North Carolina baseball become one of the best programs in the country. He played for the Tar Heels, then coached them for more than 20 years, winning nearly 1,000 games. But one thing always slipped away — a national championship. Now retired, Fox is sitting in the stands at the College World Series, watching the team he loves get closer than ever to that dream.

Fox, who is 70 years old, watched from the Carolina fan section at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska. The Tar Heels swept all three of their early games to reach the championship round. It was the first time North Carolina had made the finals since Fox led them there in 2006 and 2007. Sitting in the crowd instead of the dugout is new for him, but his excitement is just as strong as ever.

When reporters caught up with Fox at the team hotel on Thursday, he got emotional thinking about what it would mean if Carolina beat Oklahoma in the best-of-three championship series. He laughed as he imagined rushing onto the field to join the celebration. "Somebody's probably going to have to grab me to keep me from jumping on the dogpile," he said with a big smile.

Fox's connection to North Carolina baseball goes back 50 years. He grew up in Asheville, North Carolina, and played second base for the Tar Heels. At the 1978 College World Series, he was named to the All-CWS team and helped Carolina win its first-ever CWS game. In that victory over Michigan, he hit a home run on the second pitch of the game and finished 3 for 5 with three RBIs in a 9–5 win.

After playing, Fox spent 15 years coaching at Division III North Carolina Wesleyan. He returned to the Tar Heels in 1999 and became the program's all-time wins leader with 948 victories. He had five seasons with 50 or more wins and took seven teams to the College World Series. When he retired, the program honored him by retiring his No. 30 jersey in 2022.

Even though Fox stepped away from coaching six years ago, his influence is still easy to see on the current team. Current head coach Scott Forbes played for Fox at North Carolina Wesleyan in the 1990s and was his assistant at Carolina for 14 years. Several other coaches and staff members also played for or worked alongside Fox at some point. "They are my boys," Fox said warmly.

Fox has attended most home games since retiring, but he was careful to give the coaching staff space in his first couple of years away. He did not want to get in the way of what the new coaches were building. These days, he sometimes attends practices, works as a third-base umpire during team scrimmages, and even throws batting practice when asked. "I never want to be a burden to them," he said.

College baseball has changed a lot since Fox retired. Players can now earn money and transfer schools more easily, which makes building a strong team harder. Fox said Coach Forbes has handled these changes very well. The Tar Heels have made it to super regionals three years in a row and four of the last six years.

North Carolina has won 52 national championships across eight sports. A baseball title would make it 53 across nine sports. For Fox, winning it all would be the result of a dream he has carried for a very long time. "This is something I've been dreaming about for a long time, certainly since I became the coach there," he said.

More than the trophy, though, Fox said what would make a championship truly special is celebrating it with people he cares about. He believes coaches often don't realize until after they retire that relationships matter more than wins and losses. "The wins and losses are gone — poof," he said. "Those relationships and memories are what you're really doing this for." For Mike Fox, being a small part of this team's journey is already something he treasures every single day.

"Those relationships and memories are what you're really doing this for and it's hard to see that when you're in the middle of it."
