Miami vs. Stanford: Hurricanes Open New Era With Star Quarterback Darian Mensah

The No. 7 Miami Hurricanes will travel all the way to California to kick off their 2026 college football season on Friday, September 4. They will face the Stanford Cardinal at Stanford Stadium, starting at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN. Both schools play in the same conference, the ACC, so this game counts in the standings right away. Miami is coming off a strong season and is hoping to reach the national championship game once again.

Miami had a great run last season. The Hurricanes made it all the way to the national championship game, where they narrowly lost to Indiana. After that tough loss, coach Mario Cristobal worked hard to rebuild the team. He brought in several talented new players through the transfer portal, which is how college players can move from one school to another.

The biggest new addition for Miami is quarterback Darian Mensah, who transferred from Duke. Mensah brings experience and skill to lead the offense. However, Stanford has some big problems going into Friday's game. Four starters will not be able to play, including three key offensive linemen — left tackle Niki Prongos, guard Simione Pale, and center Aidan Kilstrom. Wide receiver Nico Brown and defensive edge rusher Gabe Kaminski are also out. Losing so many starters is a serious blow, especially against one of the best defensive lines in the country.

The last time these two teams played, Miami won easily. The Hurricanes beat Stanford 42-7 at home and outgained them 404-144 in total yards. Miami was picked to finish first in the ACC in the preseason poll, while Stanford was ranked last at 17th. That gap in expectations is also reflected in the betting odds, which heavily favor Miami by 24 points.

Almost every expert who made a pick chose Miami to win. One analyst, Eddie Timanus of USA TODAY Sports, predicted the final score would be Miami 41, Stanford 10. He called it 'all the makings of a complete blowout.' Still, he noted that ACC teams sometimes struggle when they travel to the West Coast, so Stanford is not completely out of it.
