Cricket Ground Says Sorry After Strange Game at Famous Stadium

June 7, 2026 · The Guardian

England won their match against New Zealand, but the playing field caused problems that made the game too short.

The famous Lord's Cricket Ground in London has said sorry for its playing field after a big cricket match between England and New Zealand. The game ended much faster than normal because the field made the ball bounce in strange ways. England won by 115 runs, but the match was over in just four days instead of the usual five. Cricket officials are upset because this was supposed to be a special 150th test match at the historic ground.

England's captain Ben Stokes said the playing conditions were 'extreme' and would not help cricket in the future. The ball bounced unpredictably and moved in unexpected ways off the ground. This made it very hard for batters to score runs and stay in the game. Most players were either bowled out or given out leg-before-wicket, which shows how difficult the surface was to play on.

The MCC, which runs Lord's Cricket Ground, admitted the pitch had problems. Rob Lawson, the chief executive, said they were 'naturally frustrated' when a surface does not meet their high standards. He explained that unusual hot and dry weather in May, followed by wet conditions before the match, made it hard to prepare a good playing surface. The ground spends a lot of money each year on research and technology to create fair pitches for both batting and bowling teams.

Stokes believes test cricket is the best form of the game because it presents different challenges each week. However, he worries about games ending too quickly because of poor pitch conditions. He said that without some rain delays, the match would have finished on just the second day. This concerns him because people often ask about saving test cricket, and extremely difficult conditions like these do not help the sport's future.

New Zealand's captain Tom Latham also criticized the playing surface. He said his team and the ground staff did not expect the pitch to behave so strangely. Latham pointed out that less than two full days of cricket were actually played on the surface. He felt this was unfortunate for such an important match at the famous Lord's ground.

Despite the pitch problems, Stokes was very happy with England's victory. He knew this game was important after his team's poor performance in their previous matches against Australia. Stokes said he was 'very, very happy' they won and understood how important this result was for the team's reputation. However, he reminded everyone that they still have five more matches to play this summer, including two more against New Zealand.

Test cricket should and always will be the best format and should never disappear.
