Money Expert Warns Summer Travelers About Health Cards

June 13, 2026 · The Independent

Over two million health insurance cards will expire this year, leaving travelers without protection.

Martin Lewis, a famous money expert in Britain, has warned millions of people about their health cards. He says many people who plan to travel to Europe this summer might have a big problem. Their health insurance cards are about to expire, which could cost them lots of money if they get sick while traveling. Lewis wants people to check their cards now before it's too late.

Over two million Global Health Insurance Cards will expire this year. These free cards help British people get medical care in Europe for the same price that local people pay. If local people don't have to pay for treatment, then visitors with these cards don't have to pay either. This can save travelers hundreds or even thousands of dollars if they need to see a doctor or go to a hospital.

Lewis told people to check their cards right away. If your card has expired, you can get a new one for free from the government. He warned people not to pay money to websites that claim they can get you a card faster. Some dishonest websites try to trick people into paying for cards that should always be free.

The money expert also said people should buy travel insurance as soon as they book their trips. Many people wait until right before they leave to buy insurance, but this is a mistake. Travel insurance doesn't just protect you while you're away from home. It also helps if something happens before your trip that stops you from going.

Lewis has heard from many people who booked vacations early in the year but then got sick. These people couldn't travel because of their illness, but the travel companies wouldn't give them their money back. Without travel insurance, these families lost thousands of dollars. Lewis compared this to buying a tennis racket and then trying to return it because you broke your arm while playing tennis.

These cards are useful to have alongside travel insurance, as often it can mean if you do get medical treatment, you don't need to pay the excess.
