Marchland to Stay Unbeaten

October 17, 2026 · The Straits Times

A talented group of racehorses lines up across nine races, with Grade 2 winner Marchland the one to watch.

A big day of horse racing is set to thrill fans across nine exciting races. The star of the show could be Marchland, a filly who has not lost a single race yet. She won the Grade 2 Thekwini Stakes in KwaZulu-Natal and now steps out in Race 6 over 1,600 metres. Experts say she has the skill and speed to keep her perfect record alive.

Race 1 features Digital Warfare and Monkey's Wedding, two horses who have been running well and knocking on the door of a win. Witching Hour and Total Eruption are also set to battle closely, and fans should not expect much to separate those two at the finish. It shapes up as a tight and exciting opener to the day.

Race 2 runs over 1,200 metres and features Nannie Gold, who just missed out on winning last time at a shorter distance in the Western Cape. This is her first race at the local track and she has a strong chance of winning on debut. Princess Chante was a little unlucky in her last race, beaten right at the finish line, but the longer trip today should help her. Gimmethebeatboys is a well-bred newcomer making his first start and is drawn favourably in the gates.

Race 3 is a 1,000-metre sprint where Ventura Boulevard, who finished second last time, is the horse to beat. She has already won over this exact distance before. Gaslight Dancer is expected to improve after switching back from the artificial Poly surface to real grass. Instaworthy showed better speed last time out and carries a 4-kilogram weight claim, which could give her an advantage.

The 1,000-metre Race 4 stars Anuschka's World, one of the top sprinters in the area. His last three wins came over the longer 1,200-metre trip, so the shorter distance is a small worry for connections. U S Ranger won by a huge margin last time at his home track and looks fit and ready after a rest. Danish Dynamite has beaten Anuschka's World before and must be included in any winning calculations.

Race 5 over 1,400 metres features Astronomical Boy, who showed great determination to win on local debut after a long break. His stablemate Rooster Bradshaw also won first time up locally, and that result has been backed up by other runners since. Lotus Silk has good form on the Poly but may be even better when racing on turf. Blame It On Me rounds out the main chances with some solid recent form.

In Race 6, Marchland is the clear favourite after her Grade 2 Thekwini Stakes victory in KwaZulu-Natal. She looks to have the class to remain unbeaten over the 1,600-metre distance today. From The Island ran third in the Grade 3 Langerman — a well-known race for finding future stars — and could be a real danger. Gimmethatworldcup and the dark horse Bello Gallico are also in the mix.

Race 7 is the longest of the day at 2,000 metres, and star filly Anotherdanceforme is going for nine wins from nine starts at this track. She won the Oaks easily and is trained by Alan Greeff. Prairie Dawn, a contender for champion trainer Justin Snaith, carries only 52 kilograms and could test the favourite. Zatara Magic won the 2025 Cup with ease, and unbeaten Bad Medicine will also be tough to pass.

Race 8 over 1,600 metres sees Fantine, who ran second to Poly star Kleinzee, ready to lead from the front despite a wide barrier draw. Asinantanga came from the back of the field to win on his return this season, showing real ability. Blackberry Breeze has a good gate and could use it well on the turf surface. Hoodwinked and Love From Afar are both talented enough to take out the race.

The final Race 9 over 1,400 metres wraps up what should be a fantastic day of racing. Bel Canto Dream has good turf form and is expected to notch up another win. Madra Rua won easily on local debut but faces a difficult wide draw today. Quinn's Time is back from a long break and is one to watch, while Fortune One could improve on this right-handed track.

She looks to have the class to remain unbeaten.
