Map Shows Us Glaciers at Risk After Nepal Disaster

A deadly glacier collapse in Nepal is drawing attention to similar flood risks from glaciers in North America, including one city in Alaska.

A massive glacier collapse in Nepal and Tibet this week caused deadly flooding and reminded the world how dangerous mountain ice can be. The disaster started high in the Himalayas, where a huge chunk of ice and rock suddenly broke apart and sent a wave of water rushing downstream. Scientists are still figuring out exactly what happened, but the event has people asking: could something like this happen in North America? Experts say the answer is yes — and some communities are already dealing with glacier-related floods every single year.

North America has seen glacier-related floods for more than a hundred years, especially in Alaska and western Canada. Researchers who built one of the world's biggest databases of glacial flood events found that northwestern North America has more recorded floods of this kind than any other region on Earth. That does not mean a disaster as large as Nepal's is about to happen here. Many glacier systems in North America are in remote areas where few people live nearby.

Still, scientists warn that glaciers are melting and changing the land around them. As glaciers shrink, meltwater can collect and form lakes. Most of those lakes stay stable, but some can suddenly release their water, sending floods rushing into valleys below. A 2023 study in the journal Nature estimated that about 15 million people around the world live in areas that could be hit by these sudden floods, called glacial lake outburst floods, or GLOFs.

So what exactly is a glacier? A glacier is a giant mass of ice that forms when snow builds up over many years and gets packed down tightly. Even though glaciers look still, they slowly move under their own weight. As they grow and shrink over time, they carve out valleys and leave behind rocks and soil. When a glacier melts, the water it releases can be both useful and dangerous depending on where it goes.

One city that knows this danger very well is Juneau, Alaska. Juneau's Mendenhall Valley sits below Suicide Basin, a lake connected to the Mendenhall Glacier. Water fills up in the basin and then suddenly drains into the Mendenhall River, flooding neighborhoods downstream. This has happened every year since 2011, making Juneau one of the best examples in North America of a city living with a recurring glacier flood threat.

The floods in Juneau were once thought to be fairly small and manageable. But in recent years, the floods have grown bigger and more damaging. In August 2024, floodwaters reached about 290 homes and caused serious damage across the valley. Another record flood followed in 2025, and on August 13, 2026, the river rose to major-flood levels once again.

Because the floods keep coming back, Juneau has built a strong system to warn and protect residents. When sensors detect that water is being released from the basin, forecasters send out flood warnings right away. Residents can check maps that show which neighborhoods will flood at different river levels. Emergency plans also include instructions on when and where to evacuate, so people in the most at-risk areas know what to do.

Scientists are also keeping a close eye on other parts of North America. Near Place Glacier in British Columbia, Canada, a glacial lake sent out outburst floods in both 2024 and 2025. Those events forced people to evacuate and pushed officials to increase monitoring. Researchers say similar situations could develop in other places as glaciers continue to melt and change.

Two other famous glaciers have also caught public attention: Petermann Glacier in Greenland and the glaciers inside Glacier National Park in Montana. Petermann Glacier is one of Greenland's largest and is watched closely because it affects sea levels around the world. However, it is not currently linked to the kind of repeat flooding seen in Juneau. The glaciers in Glacier National Park have shrunk a great deal over time, but that park is not known for recurring flood hazards either.

What causes a glacier to collapse suddenly? Scientists say warming temperatures can weaken glaciers and make them more unstable. When a large section of ice breaks away or slides downhill fast, it can mix with rocks and mud to create a powerful, fast-moving flood. The Nepal event was strong enough to register on earthquake-detecting instruments called seismometers. A 2025 study in Nature found that glacial lake outburst floods have been happening more often around the world since the 1980s.

Experts remind us that predicting exactly where the next big flood will happen is very hard. Every glacier is different, and a large lake does not automatically mean a large disaster. The number of people living below a glacier matters just as much as the amount of water stored above. Scientists say the best thing communities can do is keep watching, keep measuring, and keep planning ahead.

Researchers who compiled one of the world's largest databases of glacial lake outburst floods found that northwestern North America accounts for more documented events than any other region in their records.
