New York Mayor Needs Plan to Create More Jobs

June 2, 2026 · The New York Times

Mayor Mamdani has not shared details about how he will help more people find work in the city.

Julie Menin, the Council speaker, asked tough questions during the hearing. She said she was deeply concerned about job loss in the city. Menin added that she didn't hear anything about job creation at all. The mayor's official, Jeanny Pak, tried to explain the city's plans.

Mayor Mamdani has been in office for five months now. He still has not released a detailed jobs plan. This has frustrated some business leaders who worry about the city's economy. They want to see clear steps for creating more work opportunities.

New York City lost many jobs during the pandemic. The city has recovered in many ways and now has about 4.2 million private sector jobs. But job growth slowed last year, and many new jobs were low-paying positions. This raises concerns about whether the city will add higher-paying jobs too.

Several big economic problems are making things harder for the city. These include war in Iran, higher prices for energy, and cuts to federal funding. Tourism from other countries has also dropped. Artificial intelligence might replace some office workers too.

The city did add some jobs this year. However, it lost 3,100 private-sector jobs in March. Some areas like finance are doing well. Others like manufacturing and entertainment are struggling more.

At the Council hearing, Pak said the city was strong. She mentioned that New York has the best talent in the world. She also noted that more companies are signing office leases. Companies like Anthropic and American Express are planning to expand their Manhattan offices.

Mayor Mamdani wants to create thousands of child care jobs. This is part of his plan to expand free child care programs. His housing plan calls for adding 30,000 good-paying jobs each year. These would be for people who build and maintain new homes.

Experts say creating high-paying jobs is important for making the city more affordable. If New Yorkers earn better wages, they can afford to stay even as costs rise. This helps solve the problem of the city being too expensive for many families.

Previous mayors have released job plans earlier in their terms. Eric Adams released his plan in his third month as mayor. Bill de Blasio took longer, creating an industrial jobs plan in his second year. Michael Bloomberg focused on rebuilding after September 11th attacks.

Mayor Mamdani has focused on bringing down costs for New Yorkers instead. He has pushed for a rent freeze on certain apartments. He also wants to make buses free for everyone. His deputy mayor, Julie Su, says making the city more livable helps attract businesses and jobs.

I am deeply concerned about the job loss in New York City.
