PSG Soccer Coach Luis Enrique May Stay to Win Three Championships in a Row

June 1, 2026 · The New York Times

The Spanish coach helped PSG win their second straight Champions League title and wants to make it three.

Paris Saint-Germain's soccer coach Luis Enrique might stay with the team to try winning three Champions League titles in a row. The 56-year-old Spanish coach just led PSG to their second straight Champions League victory on Saturday. Team president Nasser Al-Khelaifi says he's confident Enrique will sign a new contract. Enrique has only one year left on his current deal with the French soccer club.

PSG beat Arsenal 4-3 in a penalty shootout after the game ended 1-1. This made PSG only the second team to win back-to-back Champions League titles since 1992. Real Madrid was the other team to do this. The victory was so special that even Sir Alex Ferguson, a famous soccer coach, sent congratulations to PSG's president.

After the win, PSG fans celebrated all over Paris. About 85,000 to 90,000 fans lined the famous Champs Elysees street to cheer for their team. The players walked down the street toward the Arc de Triomphe monument. French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the team at his palace and called Enrique an 'extraordinary conductor.'

Enrique has changed PSG in big ways since he became coach. Before he arrived, the team had many star players who didn't work well together. He brought discipline and teamwork to the club. Al-Khelaifi said hiring Enrique was his 'best decision' ever, even better than buying expensive star players.

The coach is already talking about winning a third championship next year. He calls this goal 'the back-to-back-to-back' because it would be three wins in a row. PSG even put up new artwork at their stadium showing the years 2025 and 2026. This shows they believe they can keep winning championships.

Enrique has a good relationship with the team's leaders and players. He gives honest feedback to players, even superstars like Kylian Mbappe. The team president and other officials always support him when the team loses games. Enrique says this support is rare and very important for success.

The coach is getting older and knows he won't coach forever. He jokes that he doesn't want to become 'an old fogey on the bench.' Enrique is a marathon runner and does other sports to stay in shape. He told reporters he might retire when his younger brother Felipe turns 61 years old.

PSG wants to keep Enrique because he turned individual stars into a team that works together. In April, French newspapers reported that PSG and Enrique were close to signing a contract until 2030. The coach earns about one million euros per month, making him one of the highest-paid coaches in the world.

If Enrique stays, his next contract might be his last one as a coach. PSG hopes to create a dynasty by winning many championships in a row. Team officials believe Enrique is the right person to make this happen and build on their recent success.

He's the best coach in the world.
