Instead, the researchers believe the curves were the result of practical building traditions. Builders and craftsmen likely passed down these techniques over many generations. There is no proof that the ancient Greeks knew about the particular visual illusions that later people used to explain the building's design. As the researchers put it, 'We simply don't know the thought process of its creators or whether they meant for the building to appear straight, curved, perfectly regular, slightly irregular, or for it to evoke any particular feeling.'
The study ends with a broader message for all of us. The researchers say that humans often fool themselves when searching for great mysteries or perfect explanations from the past. The Parthenon is still an amazing achievement of ancient engineering and craftsmanship. But its story may be simpler — and in some ways just as impressive — as skilled workers doing what they knew best.
It is very hard to imagine that any architect would build a temple with the express idea that its beauty can only be revealed at a few specific locations on the ground.
