Lebanon's Leader Demands End to Fighting with Israel
Prime Minister warns his country faces dangerous escalation as Israeli forces advance deeper into Lebanon.
The conflict between Israel and the group Hezbollah has been going on for months. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his forces had moved deeper into Lebanon the day before. His Lebanese counterpart warned that the situation was becoming 'dangerous.' Salam asked for 'a swift and real ceasefire' to end the violence.
In a speech on television, Salam criticized Israel's methods. He said Israel was 'destroying towns and villages, and forcing their inhabitants into exile.' The Lebanese leader argued this would not bring 'security or stability' to Israel. Many people have had to leave their homes because of the fighting.
Despite the harsh words, Lebanon's government is still trying to talk with Israel. Military officials from both countries met in Washington on May 29 for peace talks. More meetings are planned for next week with help from the United States. Salam said these talks might not work, but they were 'the least costly path' for his people.
