Las Vegas Cold Case Solved 20 Years Later Using DNA Technology

June 24, 2026 · CBS News

Modern DNA testing helped police finally identify the person responsible for a 2005 murder in Las Vegas.

Police in Las Vegas have solved a murder case that went unsolved for more than 20 years. The victim, Daniel Zeisler, was found dead in his apartment on December 29, 2005. He had been strangled with a telephone cord. Thanks to advanced DNA testing, investigators were finally able to identify who was likely responsible for his death.

The case began when an apartment manager noticed a bad smell coming from one of the units in a Las Vegas building. When first responders arrived, they found Zeisler's body inside the apartment. His body had already begun to decompose by the time police got there. Investigators determined he had been strangled with a phone cord and that his 1997 Dodge Neon and house keys were both missing.

Zeisler's car was found abandoned the following January in Memphis, Tennessee. Police collected evidence from the vehicle and were able to pull a DNA profile — a kind of biological fingerprint — from the car. However, when they ran that DNA through a crime database, nothing came back. There was no match, and the case went cold for many years.

That all changed in September 2024. Investigators sent the DNA profile to a laboratory called Othram, Inc. for a deeper analysis. Scientists at the lab were able to trace the DNA to a relative of the likely suspect. By working backward through family connections, they were able to figure out who the suspect probably was.

Police also believe the suspect appeared on security camera footage shortly after the murder. The footage showed someone using Zeisler's car to drive to a store and using his bank card to buy something there. These clues helped investigators build a clearer picture of what happened. Sadly, the suspected killer had already died in 2020, so no arrest could be made.

Even though no one will go to trial, Othram called the identification a significant breakthrough in a case that remained unsolved for more than 20 years. The lab said the case shows how powerful modern DNA technology can be for solving old crimes. For Zeisler's family and friends, knowing who was likely responsible may still bring some sense of closure.

Las Vegas police detective Tate Sanborn played a big role in restarting the investigation. He said he noticed the case had been ignored for about 20 years and felt it needed fresh attention. He said in a 2024 podcast, 'When I looked at it initially and saw the evidence that we had, I felt like the case needed to be fired back up.' His determination to keep pushing helped make the breakthrough possible.

"The fact that it hasn't been solved or looked at in the last approximately 20 years, that's a little unique."
