Kenya's Young Voters Are Ready to Make Their Voices Heard

October 1, 2026 · BBC

As President William Ruto runs for re-election in 2027, millions of young Kenyans are signing up to vote and demanding real change.

Young people in Kenya are planning to vote in record numbers ahead of the 2027 election. A student named Ademba Allans started a voter registration drive on social media using funny videos, music, and selfies to get young people excited about voting. His campaign was a huge success — 2.6 million new voters signed up across Kenya. Now he is working to sign up another 2.3 million before the next deadline.

Allans and millions of other young Kenyans belong to a group called Gen Z, which describes people born in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Two years ago, Gen Z led large protests that pressured the government to cancel an unpopular tax bill. Police cracked down on the protests, injuring and killing dozens of demonstrators. That painful experience pushed many young Kenyans to move from the streets to the ballot box.

More than 30% of Kenya's voting-age population is under 35, giving young people serious political power. Polls show President William Ruto is struggling — most Kenyans surveyed said the country is going in the wrong direction. Two out of three people said their personal finances had gotten worse since Ruto was elected in 2022. Even so, political experts say Ruto is a strong organizer who knows how to win elections.

Senator Edwin Sifuna of Nairobi has become a hero to many young Kenyans. He leads a movement called Linda Mwananchi, which means 'Protect the Citizen.' Young people first noticed him when he tried to shield protesters from police gunfire during the 2024 demonstrations at parliament. He has been traveling the country to build support, though he has not yet officially said he will run for president.

Young Kenyans at Sifuna's rallies told the BBC exactly what they want from their next leader. A 19-year-old engineering student named Conrad Mutangili said leaders 'promise sweets, but we don't feel any sugar in our mouths.' A 22-year-old named Yvonne Kileme said her top concern is employment, repeating the word four times for emphasis. They want a leader who keeps promises and delivers real results.

President Ruto's side says it is already delivering for young people. His party has created programs offering loans and grants to young business owners, plus technology hubs and digital job opportunities. Youth leader Kariuki Ngunjiri told the BBC that Ruto listens to young people and focuses on real development, not just social media trends. He said the party is confident of winning the 2027 election by a wide margin.

Money still plays a huge role in Kenyan politics. At a party event north of Nairobi, the BBC watched people line up to receive 350 Kenyan shillings — about $3 — as a cash handout just for attending. Political analyst Tom Mboya said that 'more so than many other parts of the world, money talks in an election here.' Large sums of money are sometimes used to try to influence how people vote.

The Gen Z movement wants to break from two old traditions in Kenyan politics: voting based on ethnic group and voting based on money. Allans has not backed any specific candidate, saying Gen Z is a 'swing vote' that no party can count on. 'There has never been a case where there is a bloc that is not affiliated to any person or any party,' he said. Whether young Kenyans can turn their energy into real political change will be decided on Election Day in August 2027.

"Because of how we created the hype around it, people had the fear of missing out. Everybody wanted to be involved."
