Kentucky Governor Asks Sen. McConnell to Share Health Update

July 8, 2026 · U.S. News & World Report

After three weeks without any public word from the 84-year-old senator, Gov. Andy Beshear wants McConnell to tell Kentuckians how he is doing.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear sent a letter this week asking U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell to share a public update on his health. McConnell, who is 84 years old, was taken to a hospital in Washington on June 14. Since then, he has not released any statement, photos, or videos to the public. Many Kentuckians are worried and want to know how he is doing.

Beshear is a Democrat, and McConnell is a Republican, so they are on opposite sides politically. Even so, the governor wrote that Kentuckians have grown increasingly concerned about McConnell's health and ability to hold office. Beshear ended his letter by wishing McConnell a safe and speedy recovery. Some political experts think Beshear may run for president in 2028.

McConnell's staff said last week that he continues to improve and is working with his team on Kentucky and Senate matters. However, they did not share any details about his illness or when he might return to work. That lack of information led to a lot of rumors and questions about whether McConnell would come back when the Senate returns next week. Because of all the concern, Republican Senate leaders spoke out on Tuesday and said they had talked to McConnell and that he seemed alert and aware of current events.

McConnell is already planning to retire when his term ends in January. Several candidates are already campaigning to take his place. Kentucky's law about filling a Senate seat has been changed twice while Beshear has been governor, and under those changes, the governor does not get to choose a temporary replacement if McConnell's seat opens up early.

The rules about replacing McConnell depend on timing. If his Senate seat became open before August 3, there would be a special election, possibly held at the same time as the regular November election. The winner of that special election could take office very quickly. But if the seat opened after August 3, there would be no time for a special election, and the seat would stay empty until the new Congress begins in January.

Kentuckians have grown increasingly concerned about the current state of your health and well-being, and ability to hold office.
