Keir Starmer Steps Down as MP After Leaving Role as Prime Minister

Sir Keir Starmer, the former prime minister of the United Kingdom, has resigned as a Member of Parliament (MP). He said it felt like the right time to leave his seat and focus on work in international affairs. Starmer had represented the area of Holborn and St Pancras in London for 11 years. He confirmed his decision in a statement posted on the social media platform X.

Starmer lost his position as Labour Party leader and prime minister in July. This happened after his party performed poorly in local elections, which caused him to lose support from within the party. Andy Burnham then stepped in to replace him as both Labour leader and prime minister. The change in leadership marked the end of Starmer's time at the very top of British politics.

In his statement, Starmer looked back on what he called an honour and privilege. He said he had spent the summer thinking carefully about his future and decided the time was right to hand his seat over to someone new. He also said he planned to keep working on important global issues, including defence, security, trade, and new technology. He added that he would keep fighting to protect women and girls from violence, something he has worked on for many years.

During his 11 years as an MP, Starmer and his team worked on many local projects in Holborn and St Pancras. These included building affordable housing, improving schools, and tackling youth violence through a group called the Camden Youth Safety Taskforce. He thanked his constituency staff for their tireless work helping local people with their problems. He said he could not have done the job without them.

Starmer also praised the Labour Party supporters in his local area for standing by him through difficult times. He reminded readers that he had led Labour to a large election victory in 2024 and served two years as prime minister. During that time, he said his government stabilised the economy, improved public services, and began lifting hundreds of thousands of children out of poverty. He also said Britain's relationships with other countries grew stronger while he was in office.

Now that Starmer is stepping down, there will be a process to choose a new Labour candidate for his constituency. That candidate will then compete in a by-election — a special vote held to fill an empty seat in Parliament. Starmer said he would fully support whoever is chosen for that role. He also pledged his continued backing for Prime Minister Andy Burnham and the Labour government.
