Katy Perry festival performance canceled hours before showtime due to extreme weather
A dangerous heat wave and an incoming storm forced organizers to call off Perry's set at a Belgian music festival, putting crowd safety first.
Pop star Katy Perry had to cancel her concert at Werchter Boutique, a music festival in Belgium, just hours before she was supposed to take the stage on Saturday. The government ordered the cancellation because of dangerous weather moving into the area. Perry, who is 41 years old, told her fans on Instagram as soon as she heard the news. She said she was already backstage getting her hair and makeup done when organizers told her the show had to stop.
Perry wrote on Instagram that she was just as upset as her fans. She explained that the decision was not hers to make, but she understood why it had to happen. "I am sorry I can't change the weather, and even sorrier that all of us can't be together tonight," she wrote. She also shared a fun detail — she had planned to wear the same outfit she wore at a Werchter show back in 2009, which would have been a special surprise for the crowd.
The cancellation came during a powerful heat wave that was hitting much of Europe. Temperatures in Belgium reached 97 degrees Fahrenheit, which is 36 degrees Celsius, the day before the festival. The World Health Organization reported that more than 1,300 extra deaths across Europe had been connected to the extreme heat since June 21. This kind of dangerous heat can put large outdoor crowds at serious risk.
After the festival was called off, a severe storm did pass over the country, showing that the safety concerns were real. Festival organizers confirmed that all 55,000 attendees left the site without getting hurt. This proved that the difficult decision to cancel the show likely protected a lot of people from danger. Perry asked her fans to get home safely in her message.
Perry is still scheduled to perform at Cardiff Castle in Wales on Tuesday, June 30. Earlier in June, she performed her song "Wonder" with young Norwegian singer Tius at the FIFA World Cup 2026 opening ceremony in Los Angeles. She also released a new single called "Watch It Burn" last week. Fans have plenty of things to look forward to from the singer, even after the disappointing cancellation.
Perry has also been in the news lately for her relationship with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. She appeared on a podcast called Unfamous with Justin Tranter this month and talked about how the relationship has changed her. "I have love in my life now that's transformed me," she said. She even compared her feelings to the famous Beatles line, "All You Need is Love," saying that some clichés exist for a good reason.
"The safety of all 55,000 of you always comes first and foremost."
