July 4 Flights Are Getting Cheaper, But Watch Out for This One Pricey Day

June 24, 2026 · USA Today

Airfares are trending down for the holiday weekend, but flying on July 2 could cost you 25% more than flying on the Fourth itself.

Millions of Americans are planning to fly somewhere for the July 4 holiday weekend, one of the busiest travel times of the year. Good news for families watching their budgets: airfares are going down for the first time in weeks, according to the travel booking site KAYAK. But not every day is a bargain — one day stands out as much more expensive than the rest, so knowing when to fly can save your family real money.

Travel experts say that people are thinking differently about summer trips this year. Instead of asking 'Where do I want to go?' many travelers are now asking 'How do I make this trip work?' That shift shows up in the numbers. The travel company Expedia found that searches for economy airfare — the most basic and affordable tickets — jumped 120% compared to last year. Even more striking, the use of budget filters, which help people find the cheapest options, shot up by more than 1,200%.

Melanie Fish, a spokesperson for Expedia, explained what is driving this change. 'We've seen budget filtering skyrocket more than 13 times higher than this time last year, along with more people using rewards, choosing all‑inclusive stays, and looking just outside major destinations to stretch their dollars,' she said. This means travelers are getting creative about how they spend their money. They are looking at towns near popular spots rather than the popular spots themselves, hoping to find lower prices and fewer crowds.

So which day is the most expensive to fly? According to KAYAK, that would be Thursday, July 2. Airfare on that day averages about 25% higher than on July 4 itself. In real dollar terms, KAYAK data shows the average domestic flight on July 1 or July 2 costs around $380, while the same type of flight on July 4 drops to about $286. That is a difference of nearly $100 per ticket, which adds up fast for a family traveling together.

If you are looking for a fun and affordable destination, Expedia has a list of trending spots for the holiday weekend. Many of them are near national parks or offer outdoor adventures. Moab, Utah and Flagstaff, Arizona are both close to stunning natural landmarks and are known for being budget-friendly alternatives to more famous tourist cities. Gatlinburg, Tennessee, Mariposa, California, and Bozeman, Montana also made the list. Travel site KAYAK is also seeing more people searching for cities hosting big sports events, like Kansas City, New York, and San Antonio.

Beach lovers can also find some deals this Fourth of July. KAYAK lists Fort Lauderdale, Florida as the cheapest beach destination, with average airfare at $281. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina comes in at $305, and West Palm Beach, Florida averages $320. These prices are lower than what you might expect for a peak holiday weekend, making them solid choices for families wanting sun and sand without spending too much.

Even Hawaii, which is usually one of the pricier destinations, is seeing airfare drop this year. Flights to Kauai are averaging $652, which is 13% lower than last year. Flights to Oahu are averaging $671, down 9% from 2024. While those prices are still higher than a short domestic flight, the year-over-year drops make Hawaii more reachable for some families than it has been in recent summers. The bottom line: with a little planning and some flexibility on travel dates, the July 4 holiday weekend can still be an affordable adventure.
