Scientific American Starts Summer Reading Challenge for Science Lovers
Students and adults can read books about science and win prizes through August.
Scientific American magazine is starting its first Summer Reading Challenge on June 1st. The challenge asks people to read science books and complete fun activities until August 31st. People who join can win special prizes by sharing their reading on social media. The magazine wants readers to look for science in everything they read this summer.
The reading challenge uses a special bingo card with different reading goals. People can mark off boxes when they finish books or activities. The magazine staff will also be reading along with everyone else. They want to help people stay interested in science during summer break.
To join the challenge, people need to read books from the bingo card. They should also try the activities listed on the card. When they finish something, they can share it on social media. The magazine sends out a weekly newsletter with book ideas too.
People can win prizes by posting about their reading online. They need to use special hashtags like #SciAmReading and #SciAmSummerReading. Their social media accounts must be public so the magazine can see their posts. They can post on Instagram, TikTok, Bluesky, or LinkedIn.
The magazine hopes people will read both fiction and nonfiction books. They want readers to think about science even when reading stories. For example, they might wonder if space travel in a movie could really work. Or they might learn about robots while reading a science fiction book.
Scientific American will also make special podcast episodes about books this summer. The magazine staff might even read the same books as the challenge participants. This gives everyone a chance to talk about what they learned together.
All summer long, we'll be bringing library books to the beach, reading nonfiction epics and heart-stopping thrillers, and finding the science in all of our favorite fiction to keep ourselves sharp and science-minded.
