Jets' Minkah Fitzpatrick Fined Nearly $30,000 for Hit That Knocked Out Browns Rookie
The NFL handed Fitzpatrick its biggest Week 5 fine after a helmet-to-helmet hit sent Cleveland wide receiver KC Concepcion to the ground motionless.
New York Jets safety Minkah Fitzpatrick was fined nearly $30,000 by the NFL after a helmet-to-helmet hit knocked out Cleveland Browns rookie wide receiver KC Concepcion during a Week 5 game. Concepcion fell face down and did not move for several moments before he was helped off the field. The NFL announced the punishment on Saturday, October 17, after reviewing the play. The Jets went on to win the game 17–12, but the hit remained a major talking point.
The NFL split Fitzpatrick's punishment into two fines. The first was $17,911 for unnecessary roughness, meaning he hit a player who was not in a position to protect himself. The second was $11,941 for a facemask penalty that also happened while he was covering Concepcion. Combined, the fines came to just under $30,000 — the highest total fine for any player in Week 5.
Fitzpatrick has said he plans to appeal the fines, arguing his hit was a normal football play. The same collision also drew a 15-yard penalty during the game. In the game, Fitzpatrick recorded five tackles, four of which were solo tackles. Through five games this season, he has 21 total tackles, 12 solo tackles, and one interception.
After the hit, Concepcion was placed in the NFL's concussion protocol, a series of medical tests players must pass before they can play again. He was limited in practice for much of the week but returned on Friday. He was cleared and listed as available for Cleveland's Week 6 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens. Many people called the hit dirty, but Concepcion himself responded with surprising calm.
"I don't fault anybody. I know the game I signed up to play," Concepcion said, per Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot. The former Texas A&M wide receiver has 18 catches for 149 yards through five games this season. He was Cleveland's 24th overall pick in the NFL Draft and has become an important part of the team's offense. He has not scored a touchdown yet, but his role on the team continues to grow.
The Browns entered Week 6 at 3–2, facing the division-leading Baltimore Ravens, who are 4–1. The Ravens would be without star quarterback Lamar Jackson, giving Cleveland a possible advantage. However, Baltimore still ranks among the top five NFL teams in total offensive yards per game, making them dangerous even without their starting quarterback. Whether the Browns could pull off a road win remained an open question.
Fitzpatrick and the 2–3 Jets, meanwhile, were set to face the New England Patriots, who recently beat the Las Vegas Raiders 45–17 to move to 3–2. The Jets will need a strong performance to stay competitive in a tough AFC East division. Fitzpatrick's fines and appeal will continue to be a storyline as the season moves forward.
