Jason Kelce Makes a Surprising Slip-Up While Calling a Commanders Game in London

October 4, 2026 · Newsweek

The former NFL star accidentally used Washington's old team name on live TV — and his broadcast partner caught him right away.

Jason Kelce, a retired NFL star who now works as a TV broadcaster, made an embarrassing mistake during a live game broadcast on Sunday. He was covering the Washington Commanders as they played the Indianapolis Colts in London, England, as part of the NFL International Series. Late in the third quarter, Kelce accidentally called Washington by its old name — the Redskins — instead of the Commanders. His broadcast partner quickly stepped in to correct him, and the moment became one of the most talked-about parts of the day.

The Commanders were having a tough day on the field, losing to the Colts 30–13. Indianapolis running back Jonathan Taylor had a strong performance, rushing for 95 yards and scoring a touchdown to help power his team's win. While Kelce was talking about Washington's chances of coming back in the game, he used the wrong team name without even noticing it.

Kelce said the Commanders were doing a good job staying tight in coverage and stopping big plays. He called them 'the Redskins' while making his point. His broadcast partner, Dave Pasch, immediately jumped in and said, 'Commanders, you did it.' When Kelce asked what he had done wrong, Pasch laughed and told him, 'You said Redskins.'

Pasch also revealed that the two broadcasters had made a friendly bet before the game about who would accidentally say the old name first. Kelce laughed at himself after realizing his mistake. 'I almost made it out!' he said, showing that he knew it was easy to slip up after so many years of calling the team by its former name.

Kelce played for the Philadelphia Eagles from 2011 to 2023, including against Washington many times when the team was still called the Redskins. Washington dropped that name in July 2020 after years of criticism that it was disrespectful to Native Americans. Big corporate sponsors also put pressure on the team to make the change. The team played two seasons as the Washington Football Team before officially becoming the Commanders in February 2022.

This was not the first time Kelce made a slip-up on the air. During a Monday Night Football broadcast on ABC and ESPN, he referred to the Philadelphia Eagles as 'we' during a halftime show. His colleague Pat McAfee pointed out that Kelce kept using the word 'we' when talking about his old team. Kelce later apologized to Chicago Bears fans during the same broadcast for showing too much loyalty to the Eagles. It seems that leaving a team behind — whether as a player or a broadcaster — can take some getting used to.

"I almost made it out!" Kelce said after realizing his mistake.
