Jason Arday's Accuser Gets Teaching Ban but Keeps Research Job

Nathan Cofnas, an American academic, has been banned from teaching at Ghent University in Belgium for three months. However, he is still allowed to continue his research work there. Cofnas had accused the late Cambridge professor Jason Arday of lying about his life story and copying other people's work. The university gave Cofnas this punishment after Arday was found dead in August.

Ghent University did not use Cofnas's name when it announced the punishment. But the school later confirmed that it had imposed a 'disciplinary measure' on a staff member. That person was required to work from home and could not teach any classes. The university also said that Cofnas's research had to stay strictly focused on the topic he was hired to study — the future of liberalism.

Earlier this month, Cofnas had been fully suspended from his postdoctoral research job. A postdoctoral researcher is someone who keeps studying and doing research after finishing their highest university degree. The suspension came after Arday's death and was described as part of a 'preliminary investigation.' Cofnas posted on the social media platform X that he was grateful to the university's leader, Petra De Sutter, 'for allowing me to stay.'

The US ambassador to Belgium, Bill White, got involved in the situation. An ambassador is an official who represents one country in another country. White had previously called Cofnas's suspension 'truly unacceptable' and demanded that De Sutter end it right away. After the ban was changed, White claimed on X that he had helped fix the problem quickly.

White wrote on his personal account: 'I just saved Belgium from a complete global media meltdown and well deserved spanking by @elonmusk and everyone by resolving the UGHENT Cofnas matter - quite quickly.' The night before that post, Cofnas had thanked White and the US State Department for 'defending American values.' Cofnas said it was hard to believe that such an important person would care about the situation of a postdoctoral researcher.

Ghent University said it had been in contact with White and that he gave the school 'further context' about his public statements. The university also said that an inquiry — meaning a formal investigation — was still going on. Officials want to find out if Cofnas deserves more punishment. Ghent said it would not comment further while the investigation was ongoing.

Cofnas's time at Ghent has been full of controversy, which means it has caused a lot of disagreement and argument. Back in May, the university's philosophy department told school leaders that Cofnas had very limited expertise for his job and may have had a 'far-right agenda.' In July, Cofnas accused Arday of plagiarism — which means copying someone else's work and claiming it as your own. He also said Arday had made false claims about his own life story.

Arday was found dead on August 14. His family called him an 'amazing father, partner, brother, uncle and son.' The circumstances of his death led to even more attention being placed on Cofnas and the accusations he had made. Many people felt that the timing of the controversy and Arday's death made the situation especially painful and difficult.

Cofnas has written many opinions online that some people find offensive. He has been accused of promoting pseudoscientific ideas, meaning ideas that look like science but are not supported by real evidence, especially about racial differences between people. At the same time, Cofnas has also criticized former US President Donald Trump on some issues, like trade tariffs. When asked by reporters if he still stood by those criticisms, Cofnas said he had voted for Trump three times and still supported some of his policies, like free speech protections.
