India Plans to Build Big City on Remote Island

June 7, 2026 · NPR

The Great Nicobar Project would bring airports, ports, and tourism to one of the world's most isolated places.

Field biologist Sumit Kumar walks through a dark forest on Great Nicobar Island, looking for a special bird. His flashlight catches the glow of fireflies dancing around the trees. Suddenly, he hears a soft hoot coming from the branches above. Kumar points his light upward and sees a rare Nicobarese Scops owl staring back at him with wide, angry-looking eyes.

The owl seems to be saying 'You don't belong here,' and Kumar admits the bird might be right. Great Nicobar Island is one of the most isolated places on Earth, sitting deep in the Indian Ocean. Until a few decades ago, only about 1,000 indigenous people lived on this remote island. Today, it still feels like a place where outsiders don't quite fit in.

But that peaceful isolation is about to change forever. The Indian government has announced plans to transform this sleepy island into a bustling city over the next three decades. The massive project will bring airports, shipping ports, and enough hotels and attractions to welcome one million tourists each year. That's nearly 100 times more people than currently live on the entire island.

The development will cover an area twice the size of Manhattan and could include skyscrapers, nightclubs, and even Disney-style theme parks. For an island where you can still hear owls hooting in virgin forests, this represents a complete transformation. Many people wonder if such a dramatic change is worth the cost to nature and the island's original inhabitants.

When you spot them, they look at you as if to say, 'You don't belong here.'
