Why Being a Parent Feels So Hard Today
Social media and endless advice are making parents feel like they're failing, experts say.
Many parents today feel like they're doing everything wrong. They worry they're not good enough compared to other families they see online. Experts say this feeling is getting worse because of social media and too much advice from others. Parents are spending more time with their kids than ever before, but they still feel like failures.
Kristin Gallant felt this way when her children were little. She had a 3-year-old and a 1-year-old to care for every day. When she looked at social media, other parents seemed perfect while she felt messy and tired. They made cute snacks and looked great, while she was dealing with dirty diapers and felt overwhelmed.
Social media makes parenting pressure worse than it used to be. In the past, parents only got advice at school events or neighborhood parties. Now they see perfect families online all day long. Special computer programs called algorithms show parents ads for expensive products and parenting methods that promise to make their children successful.
Research shows that 72% of parents want more quality time with their children. More than half of working parents feel like they don't spend enough time with their kids. Even stay-at-home parents feel guilty when they need a break. This happens even though today's parents actually spend more time with their children than parents did in previous generations.
Experts say our society makes parenting harder than it needs to be. School schedules don't match work schedules, and some parents have to return to work just weeks after having a baby. Moms feel this pressure more than dads, with 91% experiencing 'mom guilt' about not being perfect mothers. The pressure to do everything right makes parents feel like they're always failing their children.
I'm more of a messy mom. I'm more of a type B mom. I'm always gonna be late.
