NASA's Roman Space Telescope Is Ready to Launch — and It Will Change How We See the Universe
The powerful new observatory launches August 30 and will survey billions of galaxies faster than any telescope before it.
NASA is one month away from launching its next great space telescope. The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is set to blast off on August 30 at 7:26 a.m. Eastern Time on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. Scientists say it will be one of the most powerful telescopes ever sent into space. It is expected to change what we know about galaxies, dark matter, and planets beyond our solar system.
NASA scientists held a press conference on July 29 to share a big update on the Roman telescope. They said the $4 billion project is now nine months ahead of schedule. The team sounded excited and confident that everything was going according to plan. 'The Roman dream team continues to do mighty things, and I am delighted to say yet again, Roman is ready for launch,' said Jackie Townsend, the project's manager.
Before launch, the telescope was loaded with a fuel called hydrazine. This fuel is very efficient, meaning it gets a lot done with a small amount. However, it is also toxic and unstable, so NASA is working on finding a safer replacement for future missions. For now, hydrazine is still the best option available.
Roman is headed to a special location in space called Lagrange Point 2, or L2. This spot is about one million miles from Earth, between our planet and the sun. It is a great place for telescopes because the spacecraft can keep its instruments shaded from heat while still getting power from sunlight. The James Webb Space Telescope is already parked at L2, and Roman will join it there.
So just how powerful is Roman? Scientists expect it to collect more than 500 terabytes of data every single year. The Hubble Space Telescope has gathered about 400 terabytes of data over its entire 35 years in space, and Roman will beat that total in less than one year. 'That one month of observations to survey our Milky Way galaxy would take about a century with Hubble,' said Julie McEnery, Roman's senior project scientist.
Roman's images will also be enormous in size. Scientists say you would need more than half a million 4K television screens just to display a single Roman image. Those TVs would cover 45 city blocks in Manhattan, which gives you a sense of just how wide and detailed Roman's pictures will be.
Compared to the James Webb Space Telescope, Roman works in a different way. Webb is designed to zoom in very deeply on distant parts of the universe, while Roman is built to take wide, sweeping views of the sky. One Roman image covers about 50 times more sky than a Webb image. Together, the two telescopes work like a team — Webb finds rare things in the far universe, while Roman finds rare things closer to home.
Roman also carries a special instrument called a coronagraph, which can block out the light from a star so scientists can see planets orbiting nearby. 'I think of this as doing magic with physics,' said McEnery. 'We're taking advantage of the wave properties of light to cancel out the light from a star, so that we can image planets next to it.' This could lead to major breakthroughs in the search for exoplanets, which are planets outside our solar system.
The telescope is named after Dr. Nancy Grace Roman, a trailblazer in astronomy. She was the first woman to hold an executive position at NASA and the agency's first chief of astronomy. She helped make the Hubble Space Telescope possible, earning her the nickname 'the mother of Hubble.' She also helped build the foundation for exoplanet research long before the first exoplanet was ever discovered.
Project manager Jackie Townsend ended the press conference with a hopeful message. She imagined a future student — maybe someone sitting in a classroom right now — who will one day study Roman's data and be inspired to become a great scientist. 'The next Dr. Nancy Grace Roman, sitting in a classroom somewhere next year, will be studying our data and hopefully catch the science bug,' Townsend said. Roman's biggest discoveries are still unknown, but the team believes the greatest surprises are yet to come.
"It's going to do things that currently are impossible."
