Israel's Netanyahu Condemns Settler Attack on West Bank Village

On August 29, dozens of Israeli settlers attacked a Palestinian village called Qusra in the West Bank. Settlers threw stones at residents and locked themselves inside a Palestinian home while people were still inside. The attack drew sharp words from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who called the settlers' actions criminal. It was unusual for Netanyahu to speak out so strongly against settler violence.

The trouble in Qusra had actually started weeks earlier, in early August. A group of settlers began blocking food and other supplies from reaching Palestinian homes on the edge of the village, near a city called Nablus. This left some residents trapped inside their homes and drew strong criticism from the United States ambassador to Israel. Even after those early weeks of tension, Israeli forces continued to operate in the area and settlers were still seen roaming the nearby hills.

On the day of the main attack, a local resident named Yussef Abdul Kareem Hassan described what happened. He said a few villagers were doing repair work on a house when a small group of settlers approached them. The settlers then called for more people, and dozens returned. They surrounded the Palestinians inside the house and began throwing stones at them.

The Israeli military confirmed the attack in a statement. Soldiers and border police were sent to the village after reports of violence, including stone-throwing toward Palestinians. When they arrived, they found dozens of settlers who had locked themselves inside a Palestinian home while Palestinian residents were still there. Soldiers worked to remove the settlers, separate the two groups, and take vehicles believed to have been used to reach the area.

In the nearby village of Jalud, things were also dangerous that day. NBC News reported that masked settlers attacked members of its news team and injured a Palestinian woman the reporters had gone to interview. The incidents in both villages showed how serious the situation had become. The attacks brought international attention to the growing violence in the region.

Netanyahu released a statement condemning the violence in both villages. He said a small group of rioters was breaking the law, hurting Israel's image in the world, and making it harder for the Israeli military to do its job. Israeli President Isaac Herzog also condemned the attack in Qusra. Israel's foreign ministry called the violence 'a disgrace.'

Settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank is not new, and it has been happening for years. In many cases, settlers have faced little or no legal punishment for their actions. But in recent months, attacks have increased sharply. More than 500,000 Israelis live in settlements in the West Bank, which are considered illegal under international law, among about three million Palestinians.

Since the start of the war in Gaza in October 2023, the conflict has cost many lives. According to data from the Palestinian health ministry, at least 1,103 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank by Israeli forces or settlers. That number includes both fighters and ordinary civilians. Israeli records show that at least 48 Israelis, including civilians and soldiers, were also killed during the same period.
