Israel Attacks Lebanese City After Telling People to Leave
Eight people died in the bombing of Tyre, a historic port city in southern Lebanon.
Israel bombed the city of Tyre in Lebanon on Tuesday, killing at least eight people. The attack happened after Israel told all people in the city to leave for their safety. Tyre is a historic port city in southern Lebanon that has been part of a war between Israel and a group called Hezbollah since March.
The bombing hit the eastern part of Tyre in one single strike. Videos from the area showed broken pieces of buildings scattered across roads. Smoke filled the streets, and rescue workers used cranes to search for people who might be trapped. Emergency teams were still looking through the damaged buildings for anyone who survived the attack.
Earlier on Tuesday morning, Israel had warned everyone in Tyre to evacuate, or leave the city. This was the first time Israel told the entire city to leave, including a Christian neighborhood in the northwest. Many people who had already fled from other parts of the city were staying in this Christian area. Previous warnings had not included this neighborhood.
Last week, Israeli military leaders said fighters from Hezbollah were hiding in the Christian quarter. Hezbollah is a group that gets support from Iran and fights against Israel. Israel asked the Christians in the city to make Hezbollah leave. Israeli officials threatened to order everyone out if the fighters stayed.
Lebanese news reports said people were running away from the city on Tuesday. Emergency workers helped elderly residents who had stayed behind get to safe places. The organization Doctors Without Borders said it was very worried about forcing people to move. They said making people leave before attacks puts them in danger because they have to travel in unsafe and chaotic conditions.
Rescuers were still searching through the rubble of the strike for survivors.
