India's Space Startups Are Taking Off. But Can They Scale?

A new wave of Indian companies is using satellites and AI to change how we see Earth — and the government wants to help them grow.

India's space industry is growing fast, and a new group of private companies is leading the charge. These startups are building satellites, using artificial intelligence, and turning images from space into useful information. The Indian government is helping them by creating special funds and programs to support new technology. The big question now is whether these young companies can grow large enough to compete on a global stage.

One company at the center of this effort is SatSure, based in the city of Bengaluru. SatSure uses satellite images of Earth to help people make decisions in areas like farming, construction, banking, and insurance. The Indian government recently chose SatSure to receive money through its Technology Adoption Fund, a program designed to help startups turn new ideas into real products.

With that support, SatSure is building a system called Dhaarini. Dhaarini is powered by artificial intelligence built specifically for India. Co-founder and CEO Prateep Basu says the system will act like a 'backbone' — a core tool that helps make sense of the huge number of satellite images being collected every day.

Basu says Dhaarini will be easy for anyone to use. 'You can simply interface like what you do on ChatGPT,' he explained. 'You can interface over Dhaarini — tell me what happened on this particular piece of land and it will give you the answers.' In other words, users could ask the system questions about any piece of land and get clear answers based on real satellite data.

Another Bengaluru startup, Pixxel, is also making waves in the space industry. Pixxel is building what it calls a 'health monitor for the planet' using a special kind of technology called hyperspectral imaging. This technology captures images using many different wavelengths of light, creating very detailed datasets about the Earth's surface. The company is backed by Google, one of the world's biggest tech firms.

Pixxel's CEO and founder, Awais Ahmed, says the company saw an open space in the market and decided to fill it. 'Since no one else was doing it commercially globally, we thought, okay, here's a gap we can build and launch our own constellation of hyperspectral satellites,' he said. His goal is for Pixxel to become the world's best at this kind of Earth imaging.

Pixxel has already made a big name for itself. In 2024, NASA chose Pixxel to provide hyperspectral Earth-observation data for scientific research. The company now has six satellites in orbit and plans to launch up to 24 more over the next two years. That would make it one of the largest hyperspectral satellite networks in the world.

Both Pixxel and SatSure are also part of a larger plan. They have joined two other companies to form a group called Allied Orbits, a four-company team that plans to invest more than 130 million US dollars to build a network of 12 Earth-observation satellites. The project is supported by IN-SPACe, India's national space promotion agency. The goal is to collect data that can be used for farming, tracking climate change, and responding to natural disasters.

"That would be our entry point into being something that we can be the best in the world."
